Easy to use format - great "tell it like it is" advice

At last a book to put in the hands of every singer interested in pursuing a performance career! Filled with the kind of practical lessons and pieces of advice that can take a lifetime to collect, this resource pulls no punches when offering guidance on everything from selecting the perfect microphone to maintaining quality relationships with the musicians and technicians who are all a part of one's own success. As a vocal teacher, if I had a dollar for every time a student has asked how to get "started" in the business, I'd be set for life. Now, without hesitation, I know my response will include "read this book!"

The strength of this book is in how it resists the temptation to become technique-heavy. Rather it focusses on some of the practical information that singers would not commonly learn from their own voice teacher or coach. "The Ultimate Guide" is rich in trade secrets of the true art and science of vocal performance that typically are only learned "on the job." Any singer who truly takes the Top Action Lists to heart will find themselves way ahead of the learning curve as a vocalist, performer and genuine professional.

Truly, everything the modern singer needs to know.

The serious singer has a lot to think about. Booking gigs, staying healthy, good vocal production, being original and memorable, the PA, sound effects, social media and getting paid. This book covers all of this and more. It really is “ultimate.” There are 18 chapters, with each chapter broken up into two sections. The first section consists of “Actions” which give practical advice and goals for the singer. The second section consists of “Frequently Asked Questions.” I’ve been performing music professionally for 8 years (mostly as a drummer), and many of these FAQs are questions I’ve had or are questions I should have been asking. The content is consistently interesting enough to be read from start to finish, but more importantly, this book’s layout makes it easy to refer to specific sections for later review. There are over 100 contributors ranging from performers, vocal coaches and researchers. These people write with authority from real life experience – they know what they’re talking about.

I studied voice in college, but just started singing professionally a year ago. I wish I had started earlier, but I’m glad I have this resource to renew my interest in truly understanding the anatomy and healthy production of the voice. The Ultimate Guide to Singing does a great job explaining technical terms and ideas quickly and concisely in a way that will clear things up for the new singer without boring the experienced singer with long passages of stuff they learned their first year of college or maybe even high school choir. (Even the experienced singers can use a quick refresher, right?) Get this book, take it to heart, get a voice teacher and have a good time singing! There is a lot of great information here, but there is also a lot of heart. The contributors obviously love their craft and are excited to share their passion with others – it’s not only educational but inspiring! Recommended for ANYBODY who is already singing professionally, or anyone who wants to, whether you’re a singer-songwriter singing in coffee shops, a studio musician, the lead singer of a rockin’ bar band or anyone in between.

Excellent Beginner Book

My daughter's violin teacher required this book for lessons. The lessons are easy and incremental. After only about 3 months of lessons, my daughter knows the notes and is playing many of the pieces. Each week she gets better and better. I would recommend this book to any beginning violin student.

I teach violin and I strongly recommend this method book. Go slow with the book and focus on rhythm and principles of bowing before finger crossing. Remember to be good at violin one needs a professional violin and bow from a qualified violin maker. And Solid foundation of bowing perfect rhythm.

John Ford is a monumental figure in Hollywood and world cinema. Throughout his long and varied career spanning the silent and sound era, he produced nearly 150 films of which Iron Horse (1924), Stagecoach (1939), The Grapes of Wrath (1940), How Green Was My Valley (1941), The Searchers (1956) and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) are classics of cinema. Ford was also an influential figure in developing, and extending Hollywood's traditions. Stylistically Ford was instrumental in developing new camera techniques, atmospheric lighting and diverse narrative devices. Thematically, long before it became conventional wisdom, Ford was exploring issues that concern us today, such as gender, race, the treatment of ethnic minorities and social outcasts, the nature of history and the relationship of myth and reality.  For all these reasons, John Ford the man and his films reward thought and study, both for the general reader and the academic student. Thinking in a new way

Kinship With All Life has made a lasting impression on me. The way the author gently leads the reader through his experience with animals and other life, as well as describing the special relationship those who are "gifted" have enjoyed has brought me to a new level of peace and relaxation. Pleasantly worded, easy to read, full of anecdotes and stories which are rather spiritual in nature, Allen has made a believer out of me.

Different But True

I believe the author of this insightful and touching book not only reveals the possibility of deeper communications with all forms of living creatures, but also expresses a most profound principle on how it is done. The concept of all creation being a part of one infinite source (whatever that is; some call it love, truth, mind, spirit, God, etc.) is not new. But this author, through his great experiences with creatures of all types, discovered how to practically apply the principle of oneness to vastly expand communications with other beings. Of course the methods of communication are different, but the communication is evidently true, nonetheless. The author's experiences are so touching, I was inspired to try to do what the author describes, and had very interesting results. I won't go into that here, but I discovered that in trying it with animals, I realized that taking the time to honestly note and appreciate the good qualities of each living thing, has some changing effect on my relationship/communication with them. It does open some new line of communication in a mental way. But, it's not like telepathy or anything like that; I began to realize it has something to do with the principle: if there is one source, let's call it for this purpose "intelligence" or "mind," then this source must be the mind of of all living things? In this way, all living things could be connected? Therefore, it makes sense that if we have a question, problem, etc. we'd like to address with another living creature, we could express it mentally and listen patiently for the response, which can come in a variety of interesting ways...be it a sudden thought we have, a brilliant idea, a feeling, etc. Obviously, it is not a verbal or even conscious response, per se, from the creature, but as the mind of the creature is the source of all intelligence, an intelligent response can come, nonetheless! No doubt it takes a level of belief that all this is possible before we will even attempt this form of patient listening. Without listening how can we ever hear anything on any level? Doesn't this question really hit a chord of truth about most of our problems in life. We're all so busy talking and doing things...the art of really getting outside of all that and listening, is barely ever practiced. I think this book leaves such a lasting impression because it reminds us to listen, which is really food for our very souls, but even more importantly it shows us the very practical results of doing so. As this book, in essence, expresses and proves the spiritual principle in practice, it is very unique and refreshing.

JUST READ IT. Learning to be in such harmony with an animal is just an amazing and wonderful read...and its TRUE. What more can you want? you can learn from it as well; it teaches a different perspective toward all life that will never fade away no matter how many years go by.

Graham Elliot: When you first auditioned for MasterChef did you ever imagine you we'd be talking about your very own cookbook a year later?

Christine Ha: Definitely not. I mean, it was my dream, yes. Out of the trophy/title, monetary winnings, and the cookbook deal, the cookbook was the prize I wanted the most. It only made sense--I am a writer, and by nature, writers want to share themselves with the world through their stories. What better way to marry the two loves of my life--food and word--than with my very own cookbook? But to compete against more than 30,000 home cooks across America? I don't like to get my hopes up, so I tried not to give it much thought. Well, I realize now that nothing is impossible if you set your mind to it and play it smart.

GE: Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich and I were always blown away by your ability to present beautiful, edible creations. How are you able to produce such visually stunning dishes without your sense of sight?

CH: Ah, that seems to be the million dollar question. Well, I've always had an elephant's memory, and this was only perpetuated with my vision loss. Now that I can't depend on my eyes to see what's laid out on the counter, I have to memorize where I put the basil, the knife, the sauté pan full of hot oil. This memory of how foods look--shape, their color, their texture--is what aids me when I plate a dish. I think having to feel your food forces you to become more connected with it; that's the belief of those cultures that eat their meals with their hands--touching your food with your fingers increases awareness. I also believe the fact that I can't see the small imperfections on a plate--say, the microgreens not being set exactly 2.5 inches apart--makes for a more organic and, in my opinion, aesthetically more pleasing plate.

GE: Which aspects of your cooking style do you think will be most popular with the average American home cook?

CH: Oh, Graham, I'm smart, but I'm not psychic! Is there really such a thing as an "average American home cook"? Americans are hardly average at all. Like I said, our country is just so diverse. Plus home cooks are becoming quite sophisticated these days--just look at the range of talent you see on each season of "MasterChef." I will say, however, that with demographics moving more and more towards dual income households, and even in the case of stay-at-home parents who are busy taking care of the kids and the house, people have less time and energy to cook dinner every night. For these reasons, I think many home cooks would appreciate recipes that are flavorful but not fussy. Actually, those are the exact parameters I have in my own kitchen when I cook a weeknight dinner. And for the weekends when there's a little more time for leisure projects, I enjoy more elaborate experiments like pulled pork sandwiches or my mama's eggrolls. Both types of recipes, from the easy to the intricate, can be found right here in this very cookbook.

GE: How has your approach to cooking changed over the years? How has it evolved since you won MasterChef?

CH: Like many who first start out cooking, I was very methodical. I learned by following recipes to the T--I used to think the world would end if I accidentally added one teaspoon of salt when the recipe called for three-fourths. But after cooking a dozen meals or so, I started understanding basic cooking methods and techniques. Then after another dozen meals, I began grasping flavor profiles. As with any art, once you know and understand the rules, you can break them and get away with it. Once I got to that point, I ventured off and came up with my own recipes.

Perhaps the most valuable lesson I learned during my time on "MasterChef" is to trust my gut. Food can be very subjective. I can't stand dill or cooked salmon. But hey, if your favorite dish in the world is your grandma's baked salmon with dill weed, I can't argue that. I do think, however, that one should be able to back up their penchant for dill and baked salmon. "I love baked salmon and dill weed because it's good," to me, is not a valid argument. "I love baked salmon and dill weed because I think they complement each other in XYZ ways" is an argument I can respect even if I don't agree. Having said this, however, I wouldn't want everyone in the world to dislike dill and cooked salmon, because then where would their places be in our lives? I had a creamy dill sauce over a crêpe recently, and I thought it was incredibly delicious. And salmon sashimi is on my short list of favorite foods. I trust chefs who are confident in their opinions and can back them up. Diversity is what makes this world great; we should celebrate our differences.

GE: With the veritable treasure trove of recipes you now possess, which one do you feel best represents you and your life's journey?

CH: I'd have to go with the oatmeal chocolate chip cookie. It starts out an inedible mass, but after you put some heat under it, it becomes delectably sweet--that's been my journey in life. It's by no means fancy, but it will always put a smile on your face--that's me. Sinfully scrumptious.

A Cook Who Can Write!

I have purchased numerous cookbooks just to end up giving them away because of my disappointment in the contents. Christine Ha's "Recipes from My Home Kitchen" is a keeper! Not only are her recipes uncomplicated and appetizing, her written narrative provides a wonderful context in which I understand her culinary perspective. I am a southern cook who is a fan of Asian cuisine so this book truly relates to my interests. This is remarkable book by an equally remarkable woman.

Genius and Inspiration

I gave up watching MasterChef after season 2 and when I heard about a Blind Chef on 3 that was of ethnic origin, I couldn't help but watch at least the first episode. It was inspiring through and through and made huge waves in our local Vietnamese community, radio station, and newspapers. The book is beautifully illustrated and stays mostly true to our ethnic cuisine. Really traditional Vietnamese moms might say the Vietnamese recipes in this text stray slightly away from classic dishes, but I think because this text is geared toward a more Western audience, the slight deviations work in its favor, making meals cooked from this book more in tune with Western tastes. But seriously, you could enjoy anything in here, regardless of your ethnic upbringing. I just wish there was a way to get this thing autographed ... been years since I've been so enthralled in someone's life story like this.

Wonderful Vietnamese dishes as well as American classics - something for everyone!

I LOVE Christine Ha when she was on MasterChef and I was very excited for her cookbook to come out. I have tried a lot of the Vietnamese dishes (the braised catfish is to die for!), the Korean barbeque ribs (Galbi), was excellent and the pizza (yummy) and the fried chicken (fabulous). I haven't had to adjust the seasoning on anything, it's just perfect the way it is written. I think this is going to be one of those cookbooks that you can make virtually anything in the book and it will turn out just wonderfully. This is a comfort food cookbook and I think people who are expecting some fancy Asian fusion cookbook using fancy techniques or exotic ingredients will be disappointed. The recipes are simple, using simple ingredients, prepared simply but tastes wonderful. I admit, coconut soda was kind of hard to find in my area but I found it in a small Mexican grocer. I think this cookbook has the perfect mix of Vietnamese, Korean and other Asian dishes as well as some wonderful American classics. I am Asian myself but I was born here and my parents immigrated here from China and we ate Chinese comfort food and American comfort food all the time so I appreciate the blend of the two cultures in one cookbook. All in all, this is a great cookbook and will be very well used in years to come!

Note: on the Braised catfish recipe, she refers to the savory sauce (recipe near the back of the book) which is used in the recipe but the amount to be used in the catfish recipe is not specified. The savory sauce recipe itself is 1 c. sugar and 1 c. water so it makes quite a bit of sauce. Anyone with basic cooking skills will realize that no way would you use ALL of this sauce in the Braised catfish recipe so it must be "to taste" although the recipe does not say this. I had seen a video of her making this dish on a local Houston program, and it looks like she uses only about 1/3 c. of the savory sauce in the recipe and then pours coconut soda over everything enough to cover the fish. Then it is cooked. This is what I did and it came out perfect. She also mentions the use of coconut soda in the catfish dish in her audition to Gordon Ramsay but there is no mention of coconut soda in the recipe in the book so it may have been an oversight. The coconut soda definitely makes a difference! Hope this helps other cooks making this dish.

I took one semester of Italian language and wanted to brush up before going to Italy. This is a really concise, useful tool for that purpose. However, what I recommend even more is the sister product, titled "Italian Vocabulary", which has 50% more information including almost everything that is on this one.

Back in college, I was introducted to Laminated study guides such as this one I purchased while taking an Italian class. It is a great product. Wonderfully informative and with all the basics plus extra words and phrases as well. I love these little cheat sheets.

I am a sucker for a low cost buy when it offers any value at all. This card is a great buy because it puts so much information at your fingertips in a really convenient form. The card is plastic laminated so it will stay in good shape. You can even wipe it down with a damp cloth if it gets dirty.
