One L, by Scott Turow

Thirty years after Scott Turow entered law school comes an all new unabridged production of this classic with a special introduction by and interview with the author

ONE L, Scott Turow’s journal of his first year at law school and a bestseller when it was first published in 1977, has gone on to become a virtual bible for prospective law students. Not only does it introduce with remarkable clarity the ideas and issues that are the stuff of legal education; it also brings alive the anxiety and competitiveness—with others and, even more, with oneself—that set the tone in this crucible of character building.
Each September, a new crop of students enter Harvard Law School to begin an intense, often grueling, sometimes harrowing year of introduction to the law. Will the One L’s survive? Will they excel? Will they make the Law Review, the outward and visible sign of success in this ultra-competitive microcosm. With remarkable insight into both his fellow students and himself, Turow leads us through the ups and downs, the small triumphs and tragedies of the year, in an absorbing and thought-provoking narrative that teaches the listener not only about law school and the law but also about the human beings who make them what they are.

From Library Journal
Actor Paul Rudd deftly narrates this fascinating story of author Turow's experience as a first-year Harvard Law School student. Moreover, Rudd's voice sounds remarkably like Turow's, who provides an introduction. Personal narratives written by successful, famous persons should have to pass a humility test in which all references to entrance exam scores, grade point averages, and collegial or professional honors are stricken from the text, and editors' jobs should depend on how well they apply that test. The editor of this production would receive a solid A-. Even though we know he goes on to fabulous success as both a lawyer and a writer, Turow's initial ego is beautifully subdued by the end of his year as a "One L."?Mark Pumphrey, Polk Cty. Review
“The most accurate, complete, and balanced description yet of a century-old rite of passage in America.”—Baltimore Sun

“A sensitive, dramatically paced account of the author’s first year at Harvard Law School...I read the book as if it were the most absorbing of thrillers, losing track of the time I spent with it, and resenting the hours I had to be away from it...It should be read by anyone who has ever contemplated going to law school. or anyone who has ever worried about being human.”—Christopher Lehmann-Haupt, The New York Times

Book Review of "One L"
By Jody C Lyles
The personal first hand story a law school student that attended Harvard Law is being put into perspective by showing the challenging feat of trying to be successful in one of the most prestigious laws schools in the country. Throughout his struggles while attending law school, he learns through tough times the challenging feats of life. In his book, Turow describes how hard law school actually is, but in the end he finally realized how it changed him as person. The change that has came about in Turow's life is the presence of learning the things he did, and how the way he learned what he did. One of these ways in which he learned the challenging material that he did was through an intellectual combat zone of others within the school. He describes how he was pressured by others to rise above and become the best student that he could. With this came the notion of forcefully understanding the different ideas and concepts that have to deal with law school. Through these struggles that Turow went through, we can see how the process of learning new things was incorporated in a different standpoint, this can be seen how Turow was forcefully pushed to learn everything he could, and through this pressure he learned different concepts about life and it's struggles.

A Must Read If ....
By NanookMN
One of these days I shall have to replace my copy of One-L. It's falling apart. Turow writes so well, and his One-L is a great read. I live in Minnesota. On cold and rainy days when I want to avoid the elements by hunkering down with a good book, I often turn to old favorites. They provide company with their familiarity. One-L is such a favorite. It is, however, more than just another great read. I come from a family peopled with attorneys. In the 1800s they, like Lincoln, read the law. Then they began going to law school. My father graduated from The University of Chicago Law School in 1923. Uncles and first and second cousins, all of whom were male, have been attorneys. Now the children and grandchildren of these cousins, now both male and female, are either practicing attorneys or going to law school. They all, even the oldest of the codgers, sound like Turow clones when they speak of their law school days. Apparently, the more things change, the more they really do stay the same. This book, it seems to me, should be a "must read" for anyone planning to go to law school. May each and every one of you ace the LSAT and get into the law school of your choice. And, once you are accepted, may you find a perfect study group.

April 14,2013 -- Since the weather really has been frightful day after day after day, I picked up my falling-apart-copy of One-L. Was I ever ready to hunker down and read! Alas, the book disintegrated. I ordered a new used copy which arrived in fine condition. Today, it's either snowing or raining, but I'm prepared. I'll stay inside, warm and dry, and read my new used book.

Great and insightful read.

Great book! I found myself sitting in Scott Turow's shoes feeling the emotional, and often literal, ebbs and flows he experienced during his first year at Harvard Law School. This book reads like a fiction novel but the fact that it is non-fiction makes it an even better read and has helped me mentally prepare for the infamous "One L". I'm glad I bought this book and recommend it to any potential law student wanting to get an idea of what One L is like.
