About the Author

Little book, big cure starring niacin (vitamin B3)

If not a cure then very close to one. Briefly stated-- The vitamin cure for alcoholism is niacin. The old fashioned kind that gives you a flush. 20 years ago this was the common form of niacin but has since been crowded out of the market by the no_flush, time release niacin which is not what you want to buy. Rugby makes this kind of flushing niacin. Swanson has their own brand of flushing niacin that is 500mg capsule x 250 capsules x $6.98 and as of December 2013. Swanson and Rugby niacin can be bought at Amazon. Buy the 500mg size and start with part of the tablet or capsule. Eat it at mealtime to reduce or eliminate the flush. Hoffer will say 1.5-3 grams is a good daily amount for you. You take niacin a few times a day and the daily total is 1.5-3 grams. Maybe some need more but start gradually. Don't be scared of the niacin flush, it is your friend.

Everyone has a different niacin reaction. I started gradually....By now I am up to 1000mg first thing in the morning. Taken with 4oz hot or cold water. This produces more of a flush than when taken with food. The classic Abram Hoffer (niacin guru who lived to 91) advice is to take niacin after meals. I take a few more 500mg capsules during the day so I take about 2500mg daily. To get over the hump you need to spread out your niacin. You want to maintain high niacin levels in your body throughout the day. So divided doses of niacin.
I know that if I took zero niacin for a week then took 500mg with hot water, that I will get a strong flush. I have done this. This is what scares off niacin newbies. Once you start daily niacin and take it a few times during the course of a day, the flush gets diminished.

Niacin is the core but get this book for the full story. Such as take a good B-50 complex a few times a day. This is a common supplement and contains 50mg of all the B vitamins. Take Thiamin (B1) (preferably the benfotiamine variety of B1) for brain health and repair. Yes, the B50 complex contains niacin and thiamin but you need more of those two. Also take vitamin C. The easiest C to take for me is the magnesium ascorbate powder and I take a total of 3 half teaspoons each day in divided doses. This equals about 3 grams of C. Magnesium ascorbate is a buffered C.

Eating a more plant based diet will help you. Take chromium picolinate which helps glucose metabolism. Read the book- "Lifting Depression: The Chromium Connection". He advocates 1000 mcg chromium picolinate daily. Many are in mild or severe depression caused by long term alcohol overuse. You might be a functional alcoholic who still does well at your job. Your life is not a mess but you have mild depression. Good for you! You have been strong so far. Intelligent use of niacin + B vitamins will lift this curtain of unhappiness.

Why all the B vitamins? Because high alcohol intake over years has put you into B vitamin deficiency. Why? Because alcohol functions much like sugar in your body and in the process of being metabolized it has been using up any store of B vitamins you have. When you start a high intake of niacin and the other B vitamins your sugar and glucose metabolism is returned to normal. So you will have reduced desire for alcohol due to hypoglycemic cravings. Cut it out totally perhaps.

buy it!!

This little book may have saved my girlfriends life. In fact we are wondering if she ever really was an alcoholic or just nutritionally imbalanced the whole time. We went out and bought all the recommended supplements and immediately started taking them even during detox. Within days she was filled with energy, hope and happiness. The best part of course is no urge to drink. Her body was definitely craving something but it was nutrients not alcohol. I've never seen her so happy and content. Try this if everything else has failed. In fact try this first and see what happens.

A Healthy Solution Worth Considering

Recently I started taking B3 & Vitamin C for heart & skin benefits. I noticed after 2 weeks that my desire to drink (which is an issue) had diminished to the point that I found myself refusing a second glass of wine. Since this had been a Will I had been trying to achieve for more than 2 years I figured it must have something to do with the recent introduction of B3 & Vitamin C. I would much rather consume high doses of Vitamins and be high functioning than subject myself to a bottle of wine and not be able to handle anything!

If you have not picked up a Poison Apple book, I highly recommend them. They are paranormal for tweens - very appropriate for the age. Think of Cupcake Diaries with a twist - in this case, vampires.

Emma-Rose Paley is quite different from her parents - not just in the way she looks but in personality as well. She has always been pale with jet-black hair, but she also detests sunshine and garlic. Is this proof enough that she is a...vampire?

Great-aunt Margo is coming for a visit, and the two of them have quite a lot in common. During the visit odd things occur - like animals mysteriously dying in the park - and Emma-Rose witnesses strange occurrences herself - is this proof that Great-aunt Margo is a vampire as well?

Tween readers will be delighted with this mysterious tale and will ultimately be surprised with the outcome. If you've not taken a bite out of these books yet, you should add them to your mound of reads.

My Creepy Book

I loved this book. It is just so like me! I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, and my heart was swelling and I was smiling at all the right moments. It was also really funny, and it was so easy for me to just... list the clues and figure things out on my own! This book had me hooked the entire time! People had to yell my name more than once to snap me out of this book. It made me feel like I was in the book more than any book has.

This Totally Bites was an amazing book! It was full of suspense and surprises! I couldn't put this book down. There is a girl named Emma Rose who thinks she is a vampire, but is in for a pleasant surprise. She makes friends that she never thought she'd make and has trouble with her other group of friends. This Totally Bites is an awesome books that you should definitely read!

Every write-up of this reprint mentions how it's as poignant today as back in 1985 when it was published. As the title suggests, the book, shot in San Francisco from the late '70s through the mid-'80s, is a study of the very wealthy and the very poor. In what was to become his trademark style, Jim Goldberg photographs subjects and then has them write something about themselves on the print. Of course, San Francisco is a different city now, with the income gap between rich and poor having grown to an enormous chasm. A Major Work By A Major American Photographer

Jim Goldberg has been one of the most important American photographers for three decades, beginning with the original publication of this seminal work in its original form in 1985. The beauty of Rich and Poor when it was first published was that it created a space not only for Golberg's observations about his priviledged and disenfranchised subjects, but also allowed a space for their own self-reflective self authored texts. These texts responded both to the photographs of them and to their own sense of their current circumstances. Ironies abounded: some rich people exhibited a sense of guilty self loathing while some of the dispossesed still saw the possibility to "create and empire." In the photographs of paired subjects each seemed to be having a profoundly different experience, even as they occupied the same physical space.

In the ensuing years since it was published, the book--and Goldberg's work--have become hugely influential, signaling a shift away from a single authorial voice to a more participatory and reciprocal way of engaging the human social community through photographs. In this new publication Goldberg returns to his original work, reconsidering it, reimagining it, and reshaping it as a unique experence in a unique book form. The poignancy of the original work remains intact, but Goldberg is now revealed as having a restless mind that is constantly revisiting his own work and intentions and reshaping them for himself and the viewer as he feels necessary.

In my 20s this was the most important book of educational development. Goldberg takes portraits of rich and poor people and has them handwrite below the images what they see. The deep implication is that you see the lack of equity in things like education, life experience and beyond from the level of handwriting to the words used to describe the images.

This is a truly transcendent piece that I only got to experience through the internet for a long time, but through a re-issue I jumped at the chance to own this copy. At the college I went to people stole all three of the copies that once existed , even a library only copy, although they might have just said that to the undergrads. Nonetheless, I am very thankful for encounter this piece of work.

His gift for spotting an intriguing mystery, luring the reader in, then gradually revealing his lessons in lucid prose, is on vivid display. Outliers begins with a provocative look at why certain five-year-old boys enjoy an advantage in ice hockey, and how these advantages accumulate over time. We learn what Bill Gates, the Beatles and Mozart had in common: along with talent and ambition, each enjoyed an unusual opportunity to intensively cultivate a skill that allowed them to rise above their peers. A detailed investigation of the unique culture and skills of Eastern European Jewish immigrants persuasively explains their rise in 20th-century New York, first in the garment trade and then in the legal profession. Through case studies ranging from Canadian junior hockey champions to the robber barons of the Gilded Age, from Asian math whizzes to software entrepreneurs to the rise of his own family in Jamaica, Gladwell tears down the myth of individual merit to explore how culture, circumstance, timing, birth and luck account for success—and how historical legacies can hold others back despite ample individual gifts. What explains whether or not Outliers succeeded with a given reviewer? Sometimes, Gladwell's trademark style and wit were sufficient. Many critics noted some anecdotes that did not quite seem coherent, but they commended the book anyway because Gladwell is so entertaining and enthusiastic. Yet Gladwell's talent alone was insufficient to earn reviewers' highest marks. (Indeed, several who focused on this aspect of the book were annoyed that the author seemed to be merely offering common sense with a New Yorker sheen.) The reviewers with whom Gladwell truly succeeded were those who noticed the moral message of his book: if the factors that determine greatness are so much more complicated than individual efforts, our society should provide a nurturing environment where serendipitous coincidences abound and every person has a real chance to succeed.

What Makes Success? A Little Blt of a Lot of Things. (A teacher's review)

In Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell seeks to disabuse us of the notion that genius and greatness are predominantly a function of innate ability and IQ. He rightly notes that while IQ is certainly a contributor, it reaches a "point of diminishing returns" after a while: once people score about 130, IQ becomes less important and "intangibles" (my term) become more important.

The book, then, focuses on what these "intangibles" are. Gladwell suggests that things like what income level, culture, and time of a child's birth are important contributors to success, as well as a person's tenacity and agility. As the last of these is the least conventional, think of it this way: Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and many other computer masterminds would likely not have distinguiished themselves were they born 10 years earlier (as they would not have been exposed to computers in high-school/college, and would have been in their mid-thirties by the time computers really took hold, likely already in other careers by that point in their lives.)

How does culture matter? Think about the discrepancy between how many days per year American children spend in school (180) versus Asian students (280), and how many more social expectaitons Asian students are borne into? Certianly this will affect academic and other achievement.

Now, I should point out that Gladwell is quite adept at anecdotal story telling and is much less adept at statistical analysis. As such, he could be justly accused of overstating his case (and maybe even finding patterns where he wants to see them, rather than where they exist.) Gladwell is definitely writing for the popular market so anyone wanting good "back up" of his arguments may find themselves disappointed by his cherry-picking of examples.

That said, Gladwell's book contains some interesting and provocative ideas, especially for educators and those concerned with education. His last chapter - about the KIPP schools - is a fascinating plea for American schools to infuse more rigor (and quantity) to the educational school year. As a main part of Gladwell's thesis is that how hard one works (and is willing to work) is endemic to one's likelihood of success, we set students up for failure by not expecting them to work as hard as other countries expect of their students.

For a fun read which introduces some interesting ideas, Gladwell's "Outliers" is a decent book. Those who want a little more scholarly meat may come away disappointed.

A Lot Like Gladwell's Other Books

Gladwell seems to have perfected a formula:
1. Latch onto a catchy concept.
2. Think of a great, catchy one- or two-word title.
3. Write a thin, small book.
4. Start your book with a decent analysis of some facts that support your catchy thesis, hook the reader, then let the book slide into a series of anecdotes and stories. Don't "prove" your thesis, just illustrate it.
5. Charge a lot for it (in both absolute dollars and cost-per-word).
6. Get a terrific, minimalist cover design.
7. Let the royalties and accolades roll in.

Each of Gladwell's three books ("Tipping Point," "Blink," and "Outliers") follows this formula. It's a proven winner, and at the end of this book, he goes into full rooting mode for another hit in his Acknowledgements: "[A colleague] and I have been two for two so far, and...here's hoping we go three for three." Wow. Let's just set up a toll-booth.

I don't agree with the five-star reviews. The book is just too thin, anecdotal, and un-analytical to be taken very seriously. On the cover flap, it says that "Tipping Point" changed the way we understand the world, "Blink" changed the way we think about thinking, and "Outliers" will transform the way we understand success. Uh, no. They are all decent books with provocative theses, but none has enough "there" there to change the way most people think about anything.

I also don't agree with the one-star reviews. Gladwell's topics are provocative, his books are easy reads (this one took me just a few hours on vacation, and I'm not that fast a reader), and the stories and anecdotes are interesting. I found myself pretty convinced that birthdates are important to hockey success (so he hooked me with the first part of the book), but each successive chapter became less fact-based and more story-based. That said, it's a nice easy read, and I learned a thing or two. His books are not worthless.

So I give it a nice easy 88-mph down the middle three stars. I must admit, I admire the success he has had with his formula. He makes it look pretty easy.

Work of Genius

Rarely do I find such great storytelling skill in works of nonfiction. I went chapter after chapter excited with Gladwell's perspective on Outliers. Clearly, he must have spent a great deal of time researching for the book, and I daresay the effort has paid off. I recommend this book to everyone with questions on success, especially the young generation that is preparing for the world ahead.

The Good Book of Vette

Compact , and directly to the point for a collector type buyer because the data given educates one one the investment potential. I want to own a Vette in order to drive and enjoy the sensation of a true American icon. The only thing missing are the ups and downs of each manufactured model year. Looking for a vintage or used model would be easier if the book gave a quick review if the pros and cons of each year.

always a good reference book

I bought my first copy of this book in 1985 and usually buy a new, updated copy about every 4-5 years. always a good reference book. I still have my 85 edition -- old, falling apart, and held together with a rubber band, but after 30 years, still have it. it was my very first corvette related purchase, even years before I actually bought a corvette.

The cookies on the bottom shelf

John gives his best to us again! He's a teacher that has blessed me personally and professionally. I heard John teach on this live in February 2012 with the John Maxwell Team and he was like a little kid in a candy store, filled with passion and excitement. He believes what he writes and he lives what he believes. The book is just as good as John live.

Is the book simple? You bet. Is it difficult to apply. Of course. But, the framework of the 15 Laws is one model that will help you be more successful in every area of your life. Truly, we cannot lead anyone further than we've led ourselves and this book will give you the tools to lead yourself to your next level.

1. Law of Intentionality - Growth doesn't just happen.
2. Law of Awareness - You must know yourself to grow yourself.

Blown Away, Again.

I've been fortunate to read this book and participate in lessons taught by John Maxwell. This more than any other Maxwell book has touched me more deeply and passionately than all his other work and all his other work is superb.

John is always masterful at connecting with what is "real" in people and getting down to the nitty gritty in a compelling and engaging way. The difference with this book is that it gets to the 'how' of discovering one's purpose. I have met hundreds of people who when asked, What is your purpose, can never answer. They simply don't know. In very short order The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth dives into discovering the core of ones purpose in life.

Here is what I know. Another great book on "Purpose" answers the question. John invites the reader to discover for themselves. Like 4th grade mathematics, the answer isn't as critical as the journey itself. Along the way of discovery we find so much about ourselves, who we are and why we act the way we do, and then, with intention, we begin to paint the art of passion on the canvas of our life.

The seed of greatness within each of us carries a desire to help others. We help others best when we help ourselves first. I am committed to the work within the book and I am happy to share the book with as many as will take the journey with me.

What a great question! How many times have you found yourself just accepting life instead of planning it and taking control of your destiny? I know I've been there.

Not only is the content incredible and highly-actionable, but the exercises and thought provoking questions at the end of each chapter will force you to dig deeper and make the positive change you desire.
