An ok guide with a few gripes

I own just about every guide related to Final Fantasy games. I love them for their art work and style. I picked up this guide for mostly that same reason. The art style of this game is wonderfully cute and my hope was for a guide that highlighted some of that while also being a good guide.

Quality of Make 2/5
As other reviewers have mentioned, the paper quality rips very easily. Just flipping to pages, I have personally made 1 inch tears on a few pages. The 'wet' texture some people mention doesn't bother me, the ink doesn't run so it's purely an aesthetic issue.

Guide Quality 4/5
There are easy to read maps for all area. Quests and side quests are always spelled out easily. All items and secrets are mentioned. Additionally, the guide has built in 'pro-tips' for sections. IE: Go do this optional quest now for a free 45k exp. I really like that. My only issue with the main story guide proper is it often waits till after you need something to tell you to have it. IE: Just got to a boss, it then explains you need a fire magic; rather than before the boss explaining to have a fire magic for the boss. Or a dungeon has walls to be broken but it doesn't tell you to have a mirage that can break walls ahead of time, so you have to back track to switch out your mirages.

Ease of use 1/5
This category comes down to the pokemon nature of the game. There's hundreds of mirages to capter but the guide isn't great for looking them up. Each new area lists who is available, but not how to catch them. The mirage section on how to catch them is very specific...but not easy to browse. You encounter a new enemy, you flip to the mirage section, only to have to scan through 30 pages to find the one you want. They are loosely arranged by evolution groupings, but not order of appearance or alphabetical. Alphabetical by name would have made the mirage section 10x easier to use. Or just put capture requirements under each mirage's name in the main section so you don't have to flip.

As I said, I love guides for the art. This guide had quite a bit of pictures of the different mirages and areas. Personally, I could have had more art, but in the end it was a guide book not an art book.

Newspaper pages

It's a great guide so far, the pages are quite thin and resemble newspaper quality. Not what I'm used to TBH. The pages are so thin that the printed ink makes them feel 'wet' and have that wet wrinkled look a little bit around the edges. It's not all that bad but something to note.

The poster mirage list it comes with is excellent! And so far I've enjoyed the layout. If it ends up being annoying I'll update this review.

UPDATE:
After beating the game I just want to say that this guide was truly invaluable to my playthrough. Had all the secrets, fun little grinding tips in the beginning. Things to stay away from and to try. Definitely great for the boss fights. It's not the greatest-most-in-depth guide but it's very good.

Doesn't have any kind of formula's or attack ratio's, which is nice with RPG's like this but since World of FF isn't super deep in that stuff I understand why it may not be included. If you want a full play-through or platinum, I'd recommend the guide. The easy Mirage list at the end is so much better and easier then scrolling/finding it in game.

Also on the pages, got used to it fast and the print quality was superb. Easy to read and move on to the next pages. It's just the pages were thin so they easily tear.

The content of this guide is good, but the paper material it use is cheap. I am very disappointed that Prima use this newspaper grade paper to print the guide. Nowadays, the walkthrough can be found on internet easily and it is free. I bought the guide because I want to collect it and add it to my collection. If Prima continues to use this cheap material, then I will just totally give up buying their guide book.

Relying on the kindness of strangers during her year's stint at the minimum security correctional facility in Danbury, Conn., Kerman, now a nonprofit communications executive, found that federal prison wasn't all that bad. In fact, she made good friends doing her time among the other women, many street-hardened drug users with little education and facing much longer sentences than Kerman's original 15 months. Convicted of drug smuggling and money laundering in 2003 for a scheme she got tangled up in 10 years earlier when she had just graduated from Smith College, Kerman, at 34, was a self-surrender at the prison: quickly she had to learn the endless rules, like frequent humiliating strip searches and head counts; navigate relationships with the other campers and unnerving guards; and concoct ways to fill the endless days by working as an electrician and running on the track. She was not a typical prisoner, as she was white, blue-eyed, and blonde (nicknamed the All-American Girl), well educated, and the lucky recipient of literature daily from her fiancé, Larry, and family and friends. Interesting but ultimately disappointing

I got interested in reading Orange is the New Black after reading an excerpt in the New York Times, and reading an article from Piper's fiance Larry in the Times as well. I just finished it, and I found it really interesting - the details she provides on life in prison, the rituals, the jobs, the treatment of prisoners, is really fascinating and a view on a minimum security prison I'd never seen before. But I was often frustrated with Kerman's lack of details - I had no sense of how it was that she was free to just go do yoga or run around the track whenever she wanted, or what kind of hours she worked at her electric and construction jobs. I was really moved by the descriptions of the other women in prison and of the friendships she formed, but I also had trouble keeping the women straight, especially when she'd bring up a name that she hadn't mentioned in several chapters, and I would try to remember who Delicious or Pom-Pom or Toni was.

I did find her to be a bit smug, going out of her way to explain that while most prisoners kept to their ethnic "tribes," she was friends with everyone, other prisoners came to her for help with their homework or legal work, she lent out all of her books and gave away all of her possessions, etc. While I liked her voice, I felt she went overboard in trying to portray herself as non-racist, and as someone who didn't feel above everyone she was incarcerated with.

Mostly though, I was disappointed in the ending. For the last 100 pages, I was looking forward to the end, to what happens when Piper gets home. She ruminates a lot on the balance between getting used to prison rituals but not getting so comfortable that you forget the outside world, so I wanted to know how she found the adjustment to home, whether there was any tension with Larry. Most of all, after she credits the women at Danbury for their friendship and kindness, I wondered if she simply left without turning back or if she kept in touch with anyone, wrote letters, saw anyone who got out on the outside (like Pop)? I felt robbed of one last chapter, which I felt the book was leading up to.

All in all, this was enjoyable, but not something I'll enthusiastically recommend.

Very different from the Netflix mini-series....
By Learning All The Time
I really liked this book. It is written like a series of sequential articles rather than a narrative with true character development, but it still provides interesting insights into the rhythm of institutional prison life, with its mind-numbing bureaucracy and its mash-up of humanity trying to adapt or deal with incarceration. It is told from Kerman's pov, and thus her reactions to life in prison make up the bulk of the book, but she still provides a lot of food for thought about our prisons and the people who live in them.

I came to the book through the Netflix mini-series, and the only reason I watched that was because of Kate Mulgrew who is "Red", but I found myself completely drawn in by the series story line and the lives of the characters in the movie, in spite of the fact the show was much, MUCH more shockingly graphic than anything I typically enjoy (used tampon sandwich for starters). After the mind-blowing ending of the first season of the mini-series, I had to read the book to see whether something like that incident really happened. The answer is thankfully no. There are no deaths in this book, no overt sex, no pregnancy drama, no drug-running drama, no brutal attacks, and so on.

It is difficult for many people to have compassion for people who are in prison or to care about their living conditions since they "made their bed", but I think books that remind us of our common humanity with "others" are important and worth reading, and so I added a star to the book's rating.

Recommended. And if you are put off by the graphic nature of the mini-series, this book is a "safe" read. If you are hoping to read graphic descriptions of events portrayed in the mini-series, you will be disappointed.

Self indulgent, white middle class garbage

This is truly one of the worst books I have ever read! I quit after just 85 pages because I couldn't take any more of Kerman's arrogant snobbery! If you enjoy books about wealthy, educated women who are full of self pity because they had to take responsibility for willingly and actively breaking the law or books about wealthy, attractive, well educated women who feel compelled to remind you of this constantly or even books about stuck ump women who have to keep telling you how simply wonderful, generous, smart, well read, beautiful, thoughtful and popular they are.... Well this book is for you! I am astounded this got as far as even being considered for publication. It isn't even well written - ironic given how self congratulatory Kerman is about her level of intelligence and vast reading experience. The book is the least intelligent piece of garbage I ve read in a long time.

Who would have thought a book about punctuation could cause such a sensation? Certainly not its modest if indignant author, who began her surprise hit motivated by "horror" and "despair" at the current state of British usage: ungrammatical signs ("BOB,S PETS"), headlines ("DEAD SONS PHOTOS MAY BE RELEASED") and band names ("Hear'Say") drove journalist and novelist Truss absolutely batty. But this spirited and wittily instructional little volume, which was a U.K. #1 bestseller, is not a grammar book, Truss insists; like a self-help volume, it "gives you permission to love punctuation." Her approach falls between the descriptive and prescriptive schools of grammar study, but is closer, perhaps, to the latter. (A self-professed "stickler," Truss recommends that anyone putting an apostrophe in a possessive "its"-as in "the dog chewed it's bone"-should be struck by lightning and chopped to bits.) Employing a chatty tone that ranges from pleasant rant to gentle lecture to bemused dismay, Truss dissects common errors that grammar mavens have long deplored (often, as she readily points out, in isolation) and makes elegant arguments for increased attention to punctuation correctness: "without it there is no reliable way of communicating meaning." Hilarious Professional Development for English Teachers

Once I built up some immunity against the author's relentless snobbery, I thoroughly enjoyed Eats, Shoots & Leaves. I've always been somewhat suspicious of the person who makes a habit of publicly shaming any individual unlucky enough to use poor grammar and punctuation in her presence - a habit she justifies with the rather transparent and eye-roll-inducing excuse, "I just love the English language too much to let the errors slide!" It seems there is always an ulterior motive at play: like Mom always said, "The bully who puts others down might just feel insecure about himself." If Mom's words are true, this author has one major inferiority complex.

But, although she is a bit of a curmudgeon (beware of the preface), she's quite funny; I found myself appreciating her sense of humor when it wasn't being used at the expense of the poor chap with bad punctuation. And it's true that we seem to have reached an all-time low when it comes to our knowledge of punctuation's proper usage. Who can disagree with her when she argues that it is in our best interest to refresh our memory for the sake of the clarity and style of our writing? There were definitely a few places where she clarified some usage rules for me.

In addition to being an engaging and fascinating read for anyone who is interested in English, this book is an amazing resource for writing teachers. It's full of examples of what happens when punctuation goes bad, examples that my students actually enjoyed. (I'm not kidding; they even laughed out loud at a few!) Here's just a small sampling of what she offers the writing instructor in the way of helpful illustrations:

After explaining some rules for the much-abused apostrophe, she writes:

I apologise if you know all this, but the point is many, many people do not. Why else would they open a large play area for children, hang up a sign saying "Giant Kid's Playground", and then wonder why everyone stays away from it? (Answer: everyone is scared of the Giant Kid.) - page 41

When discussing the comma, she writes:

...readers grow so accustomed to the dwindling incidence of commas in public places that when signs go up saying "No dogs please", only one person in a thousand bothers to point out that actually, as a statement, "no dogs please" is an indefensible generalisation, since many dogs do please, as a matter of fact; they rather make a point of it. - page 81

Another aspect of the book that I found really rewarding is her discussion of how punctuation influences style. It's true that much of her stylistic rules may seem rather arbitrary (for example, when she argues that dashes warmly welcome an aside while a pair parentheses treat the aside like more of an intruder). Even still, I found it interesting to think about how punctuation can subtly and not-so-subtly influence the tone and message of my writing. And pretty much of all of her arguments are persuasive, even if they are somewhat subjective.

So, in closing, if you have a high tolerance for elitism and even a remote interest in writing, I heartily recommend this book. English teachers, especially, should get their hands on this one.

Eats. Shoots and Leaves is a little bestselling guide to punctuation that has been a big bestseller. Former editor and grammatical guru Lynn Truss has done a great job in explaining the sometimes arcane way in which punctuation is important in English grammar. You will learn all the rules of usage and the history of such grammatical indicators as the apostrophe, comma, semicolon, colon/ The style is witty and wise. As a former English Literature teacher on a high school level I would recommend this book to teachers wanting to present these valuable lessons in a way which will educate students. A short but valuable classic of its kind!

Really fun read!

My ability to puctuate correctly was adequate, but I wanted to be better. I got this book and found it to be an enirely enjoyable read; it gives you confidence to use even the the more unusual punctuation marks correctly...

...and it's humerous too boot!

While the author is from the UK and explains usage common in that region, she also remarks on US usage where it differs. I was surprised to learn that there were regional differences and also that the proper use of punctuation marks is changing--and it always has over time.

In addition to being a book that comments on the use (or common misuse) of proper puctuation it is also organized in such a way that people who write can reference a certain item (do you have to use a period after Mr?) and read up if they have a question.

People writing e-books might especially appreciate this as many write without an editor; a fun book that makes punctuation accessible without suffering through Strunk and White is very welcome.

The Original "Sweet Peter Deeder" is back! - The book that came before "Sweet Peter Deeder aka Mr. Sweets".

I didn't believe I'd ever see this book again since it's out-of-print and currently is only an e-book. It was originally published in 1979 & re-published in 1987, during the times when people understood there was "sin" on the streets and in homes, and did not try to sweep it all under the rug. After reading 3 volumes of a book by an English writer, I wanted to read something with "spice" from the "hood". It's a bit raw in places for someone who grew up in a middle class family. But Sweet Peter comes across so real. His goal to become a pimp is understandable. The book makes you realize how easy it is to mold a child living in bad circumstances, into an adult who will do anything to never be poor again. It makes you understand how important it is to bond to your children early if you want them to become a valuable member of society...or they will easily go down paths to their ultimate ruin.

This workbook it really useful. I use to help all the young parents I work with. Each of the activities are easy to understand and implement. It was also easy enough to send home with my parents to do at home. I agree with most of the strategies explained in the workbook though Im not sure how culturally appropriate the strategies are. I can see more patriarchal families such as asian families may have a hard time buying into some of the interventions. Overall, a good workbook to help young parents.

This book was recommended to us by my sons therapist. So far it's been great and a real eye opener. It's really taught us a lot and is easier to keep focused on! Love the idea of a workbook as oppose to a regular hardcover. Definitely recommend!

Romance story -- Great Descriptions, Okay Plot

Billed on the Kindle First page as a psychological suspense story, "Evelyn, After" would fit in nicely on a bookshelf with other Harlequin romance novels. If you are a fan of that genre, you will probably enjoy this book. Here is a quick review, without spoilers:

WRITING -- The reader experiences the story through Evelyn, and is privy to every thought she has while processing her husband's recent affair. Evelyn swims through various emotions in her attempts to come to grips with the events on the night she discovers he is cheating on her. The book can be a bit disorienting at times, as the author alternately subtitles each chapter as "Before" or "After." The reader is whipped back and forth in time, first experiencing Evelyn's initial reactions followed by the choices the "new" Evelyn makes, with the sequence repeated throughout the book. I can appreciate that this creates tension in the earlier chapters, but near the end of the book, a reader can easily deduce the events of the "Before" chapters because of facts already revealed in the "After" chapters.
Ms. Stone entertains the reader with many descriptive passages, such as: "She couldn't remember whatever demons she'd been fighting in her sleep, but there were plenty more crouched and waiting for her when she woke." Another great picture: "...she'd imagined herself growing into an artist with wild, creative friends...Now everything about her was dull...She was one of those moms she'd watched on TV as a child. The pleasant owner of a home on a cul-de-sac, a sight she'd only witnessed in movies until she'd bought that home for herself." These types of passages are peppered throughout the book, and made the book more enjoyable.

PLOT -- Ninety per cent of the book concerns Evelyn, centering on her thoughts and actions. Faced with her husband's infidelity as well as the secret she must share concerning her husband's last night with his mistress, Evelyn's subsequent actions at times might seem unbelievable. However, who can tell what a person's emotions might impel them to do, and the only time I had to suspend belief was when she talked about dropping four sizes in two weeks. Evelyn's choices made sense as she struggled to bring order to the chaos that suddenly invaded her normal life.

WHAT ABOUT... -- The author drops a couple of f-bombs as well as a vulgarity here and there. However, I felt the f-bombs were appropriately spoken in the one conversation where they occurred, and the vulgarities were used sparingly and not scattered throughout the book on every other page. The sex scenes were handled delicately, and as a reader I understood exactly what was happening without the author resorting to language typically used by high schoolers in the locker room.

BOTTOM LINE -- Essentially, this is a story of someone’s wife becoming the woman she has kept locked inside for twenty years. It is not an incredible story nor is it horrible. It is okay, and as I previously stated, Harlequin romance readers will enjoy this one. Let's call it 3-1/2 stars (extra half-star for the great descriptions).

Probably would have liked it if it were categorized properly

SPOILERS AHEAD. Like another reviewer mentioned, this was marketed as psychological thriller/suspense, and the first third of the book did provide that. But towards the midway point it just sunk a lot into the midlife crisis the main character was going through. Lots of agonizing introspection, not very suspenseful or thrilling at all. I skipped to the end and there was a kind of twist, but it really wasn't all that shocking given what we know about that character. Lots of sex and body image issues, all handled well but I believe a better fit for the romance genre. Author bio says she's taking a turn towards "darker" side of genre fiction but I personally didn't think throwing in a crime and a suicide attempt into what's pretty much a romance novel makes it very dark. Again, the book was definitely well written but it was not marketed properly at all. Two stars for the writing quality.

ONE OF THE FINEST BOOKS I'VE READ IN 2016!

Taking New York Times bestselling author Suzanne Brockmann’s verdict at face value proved to be a wise choice as historical and contemporary romance author Victoria Dahl turned psychological suspense thriller author Victoria Helen Stone’s debut novel in her new avatar is a stunning read, well-conceived and brilliantly executed.

Evelyn, After follows the emotionally heartbreaking, electrifying story of a forty-plus Evelyn Tester who leads a seemingly happy life. Married close to two decades to Dr. Gary Tester, a psychiatrist by profession, the Testers are blessed with a smart and healthy seventeen-year-old son Cameron Tester who will be off to college soon. Life couldn’t be more promising. But Evelyn’s world came crashing down one evening when she received a phone call from Gary to rush to the site of an accident. One thing leads to another, spinning her world out of control. She’s sick with rage, horror and grief at discovering what her husband was doing to her. Sick that she was married to a man she didn’t know at all. Evelyn had worked, and toiled, almost the entire past two decades for her family – raised money for whichever school Cameron attended, volunteered her time and energy all for the sake of her family. Evelyn, After by Victoria Helen Stone is one absorbing read with elements of intrigue, suspense, and romance. Victoria nails you in suspense from beginning to end. The storyline is forever winding, but is always plausible and never unbelievable. The characters are unique and fairly well-fleshed out and realistic, and their roles carefully considered and formed. What makes Evelyn, After so enjoyable is the dialogue between the characters, specially between Evelyn Tester and Noah Whitman. It added flavour to the overall distinctiveness of the story. What really stands out was Victoria’s flowing writing and narrative which really make it easy to follow the story. I was also deeply impressed by the “before” and “after” format used in alternating chapters, which was persuasive and convincing in its delivery. In the end, I’m thrilled to concur with bestselling author Suzanne Brockmann. Evelyn, After by Victoria Helen Stone is one of the most engrossing and absorbing books across all genres that I’ve read in a long time.
