Spoiler Alert: We all die at the end.

"I always feel sorry for people who don’t drink, because when they wake up in the morning, that’s as good as they’re gonna feel all day”

The line, incorrectly credited to Frank Sinatra, might well have been said by a much older less hip Doug Stanhope about persons of my ilk; we might be utterly boring recluses but we love good comedy. That is obvious, we bought the book didn’t we? He lives this life so the rest of us don’t have to, and it’s truly comforting that Doug is out there fighting the good fight. A mere mortal man would surely perish in the wake of such depravity and substance abuse, but it’s clear Doug is no ordinary human being. He is the liver of life, the teller of truth, and the slayer of pretense. In America we might have the freedom to engage in this kind of outrageous debauchery and moral degradation, except in further contemplation we don’t. There is little question that many of the activities described in this book would land any one of us for a long stretch in federal prison, so don’t try this at home. You have to marvel at Doug’s stamina and ability to slip the grasp of Johnny Law. It proves without question that love conquers all, especially when it’s a mother’s love.

So who knew that this ex-telemarketing scam artist drunken reprobate mama’s boy could write. Damn you Doug Stanhope for getting me all misty eyed on the last page. Damn you for making me spend another $15.46 to send a copy to my sister because of our mother.

Doug, you lucked out writing a good book this time, you even got Johnny D to write the foreword. We all know about the lawsuit, it was payback wasn’t it? But let’s see if you can do it again with a follow up book, I mean you half way promised to tell us the story of Adderal Jack and Rebecca Jean. But the sophomore effort is always tougher, do you have the stones to try it? We’ll be waiting.

Thank you Doug, for bettering my life immeasurably.

I had pre-ordered this and I was thrilled when it arrived this morning. I can not put into words how beautifully Doug's masterful storytelling has filled the inch and a half thick void under the bent third leg of my dining room table. Now my beer doesn't spill when I sit alone, drunkenly weeping. Thanks to Doug and his dead mom I was finally able to bury the dead frog that I've been using to level off the table for all these months. I can't recommend this enough.

Vulnerable, honest, vulgar, hilarious, sad. This has everything a memoir/comedy book needs.

I've been boarding his work for years and when he announced that he was writing a book about his mother, I pre-ordered it immediately. As soon as Amazon carried it. I wanted to learn more about his life. Her life. People that lived the way they believed. Not inhibited by passed- down social inheritance.

The book starts with the death of his mother, which you already know all about if you listen to his stand up. He doesn't get sappy or sentimental but keeps things moving.

He spends a lot of time explaining how he worked as a con man in phone sales. Personally I would have like to hear more about his stand-up life and less about his life on the phone. However the stories related to his phone career are still entertaining and hilarious.

Once dog starts writing about his stand up live the story becomes more interesting. It was a rare insight into one of my role models and the life he lived.

The story itself is honest and painful and true. When I finish the book I compared it to other memoirs ever read. And this one sticks out among all of them. Including Angela's Ashes. And other prize-winning memoirs. While this won't likely be winning any awards, it is certainly worth reading and sharing with your friends.

I cannot wait for the next book. I'd read anything by this guy.

Some reviewers give this book 5 stars, others give it 1. So how do you know whom to believe? I think I can help you.

This book is NOT for you if:
- You are looking for a magic weight loss plan, or a new theory of weight control
- You are looking for a lot of recipes

This book MIGHT be for you if:
- You subscribe to the old, tried-and-true formula for weight loss (eat fewer calories, exercise more), but need to know the details and need some help in getting, and staying, motivated.

The book is based on a version of the familiar food pyramid, and the diet can be summarized as: Eat a lot -- in fact as much as you want -- of fruits and vegetables (most of your favorites will be allowed, and you can eat them raw or cooked, and use fresh or frozen, and in some cases canned). Eat limited, though reasonable, amounts of carbs, protein and dairy, and fats. Exercise 30 minutes a day.

If you try it, good luck to you. I'm trying it, too; good luck to me as well.

Don't waste your money on the book.

Cliche ridden, poorly organized, impossible to use in real life. Recipes make 8 servings. How many times do you see 8 member households on a diet? Calls for well-known processed foods disproven for health and wellness: egg beaters, nonfat milk, margarine. How far behind can Mayo be? The latest science shows butter to be a necessary and healthy part of a diet.Much needed for brain health.
This book has no central organizing principle. Different chapters are written by different "experts" who sometimes even contradict each other.
Do not buy this book. It is a waste of money. I couldn't find one page that gave me a suggested outline for what to eat that day. The book is a mess. Linda West Eckhardt, James Beard award winning cookbook author. Editor: Everybody Eats News

If you are looking for a quick fix to lose lots of weight really fast, this is not the book for you. There is a quick start plan that is designed to help you lose up to 6-10 pounds in 2 weeks as a jump start to the diet. I really would not call this a diet. This book is more of a way to change your life to become more healthy, with weight loss included. This book is designed not only to help you lose weight, but to keep it off because it is designed to help you alter your life habits. There are 5 habits for you to add, 5 bad habits to break, and 5 healthy habits to adopt.

The information in this book is out there. Most of you may know some of this and some of it you want. Who really has the time to look all that stuff and figure out what to do and not to do? I don't. All the information I need is right in this book. This diet is not for everyone, it is not difficult, but you have to be willing to start making changes in your life and continue to stick with.

There are no counting calories, no food scales, etc. It trains you an easier way to track what you eat. There are some recipes, but not a lot. You don't have to deprive yourself, but you do have to make smart choices.

If you are looking for the secret pill or diet to make you lose lots of weight and not have to give up the way you are living now, surprise, there isn't one out there. If you are looking a way to motivate yourself, help find control, and some good tips, this is the book for you.

I just finished the book and I plan to start my changes next week. Fingers crossed for success. Good luck to you as well!

A Great Inspiring Book For Little Minds

This is the very first book my oldest son has memorized word for word. We used to read to him short stories every night before going to sleep. It is funny how a child's mind works, but he love this book so much. It must have the right formula to pique his mind.

The book is very simple. The illustrations are colorful. It is the story of a young bird who is afraid to fly. Really wanting to join his other brothers who has ventured to another tree, he dared to get to the same tree even when confronted by every obstacles on the road. (He did it by running, jumping, swimming,...) His brothers were so impressed. In the end, he himself was encouraged by his own accomplishments that he was able to brave to try flying for the first time. The last page of the book shows an inspiring image of "Pepito" leading his brothers together in flight.

Up to now, my son still has some fond memories of this book.

An Endearing Little Character

In a beautifully illustrated book, Scott Beck has created an endearing character with a great big fear. Rather than worrying about it, Pepito works his way around his fear never realizing the true bravery that involves. All children will enjoy watching this little bird solve his problem.
The drawings are adorable, the text sweetly simple, and the story easy enough for even the youngest to understand. It is a quick, happy book- perfect for when a child crawls upon your lap and asks you to read him a story.

We love Pepito

What a great book. The poor little bird is scared to fly, but not afraid to try numerous other things. An enchanting story, very nicely illustrated, and a good lesson. Sometimes we need other people to tell us that we are brave enough to try the things we are scared of. My 2 and 1/2 year old loves the story, and we enjoy reading it to her...over & over again.

About the Author
Dee Unglaub Silverthorn studied biology as an undergraduate at Newcomb College of Tulane University, where she did research on cockroaches. For graduate school she switched to studying crabs and received a Ph.D. in marine science from the Belle W. Baruch Institute for Marine and Coastal Sciences at the University of South Carolina. Her research interest is epithelial transport, and most recently work in her laboratory has focused on transport properties of the chick allantoic membrane. Her teaching career started in the Physiology Department at the Medical University of South Carolina but over the years she has taught a wide range of students, from medical and college students to those still preparing for higher education. At the University of Texas-Austin she teaches physiology in both lecture and laboratory settings, and instructs graduate students on developing teaching skills in the life sciences. She has received numerous teaching awards and honors, including a 2011 UT System Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award, the 2009 Outstanding Undergraduate Science Teacher Award from the Society for College Science Teachers, the American Physiological Society’s Claude Bernard Distinguished Lecturer and Arthur C. Guyton Physiology Educator of the Year, and multiple awards from UT-Austin, including the Burnt Orange Apple Award. The first edition of her textbook won the 1998 Robert W. Hamilton Author Award for best textbook published in 1997—98 by a University of Texas faculty member. Dee was the president of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society in 2012—13, has served as editor-in-chief of Advances in Physiology Education, and is currently chair of the American Physiological Society Book Committee. She works with members of the International Union of Physiological Sciences to improve physiology education in developing countries, and this book has been translated into seven languages. Her free time is spent creating multimedia fiber art and enjoying the Texas hill country with her husband, Andy, and their dogs.

Missing Information

I ordered this book as a rental, because it was the best deal I could find. It was supposed to have Mastering A & P access with it, but it didn't. There was no Mastering A & P access code anywhere. I had to go ahead and purchase it at the last minute, because I was out of time. My class had already started, and I needed the textbook and the MAP. I haven't had time to try to find a phone number or an email anywhere to contact you guys about it. I had to get the Mastering A&P on my own, which was another $66. I ordered this book from you, so that I wouldn't have to pay that extra $66. For as much as I paid for the rented textbook from you, and the MAP's $66, I could have had the set from the bookstore where I go, for the same amount of money, plus I could have had it immediately, plus I could have owned the book. Please let me know who to contact about this. Thanks. Marlene Hancock

Excellent

Most importantly, the choice of content was nearly perfect... very readable, but not overly wordy... relevant to all readers who want a general overview of human physiology.

The presentation was what motivated the five star rating... The figures were numerous, relevant, informative and intuitive. ... However, there were several innovations in presentation of note. In particular, each chapter had a running series of short clinical correlation boxes, where the relevance of the physiological information was highlighted.... At the end of the chapter there was a concise summary that was easy to read and was competed... The questions at the end were segregated into levels of difficulty and were valuable checks of one's grasp of the material... I can't say enough...

With regard to weaknesses, or more precisely text personality... There was very little emphasis on quantitative aspects of physiology, i.e. equations. Many of the important equations were presented, just not emphasized... this goes counter to my view of physiology as a quantitative science.... rather than just a study of structure and function... but, perhaps, the quantitative aspects are more appropriate for a more advanced audience.... Also, one had to progress substantially into the text (500 or so pages), before homeostatic mechanisms were discussed (where I believe these mechanisms form the core of the science of physiology)..... And, most of the first third of the book related more to cellular physiology than to system physiology... an important subject that brings everyone up to speed, but which takes substantial time to master and makes it hard to apply this text to a single semester course....

You cannot imagine how valuable this book can be; nearly 100 graphs and tables packed into 124 fun to read pages!

Don Wheeler, former colleague of W. Edwards Deming, explains how VERY SIMPLE statistics can transform any business process.

As a young boy in Tennessee, I sometimes uncovered "white lightning" (moonshine whiskey) hidden in forests. MIght his East Tennessee roots give Wheeler his rare sense of humor and fascination with how data and KPI's can be used to "cheat?"

This book is very rich in actual examples of data being used to mislead as well as KPI's which actually promote THE OPPOSITE behavior intended.

Wheeler takes the reader through multiple "cycles of learning" in this short read which is easily completed in under 2 hours on a flight. But be warned; once you read this book you will want to reread it and apply the lessons many times.

Are your processes "predictable" or are they "unpredictable?" With his jargon free, reader friendly style, Wheeler explains clearly 3 kinds of "Voice of the Customer" specifications, as well as sharing multiple examples and pitfalls which leaders make converting data into knowledge.

If you suffer from "rare" but important defects, be sure to read the next to last chapter. Brilliant!

The cases on pages 86 and 131 will inspire you to gain new insights building on the easily understandable histograms.

A must read for any Lean Six Sigma Executive, Sponsor or Belt. I buy this book in boxes of 10; I often find my colleagues and contacts asking to have my copy!

Confused When Others Talk About Data?

I wish economists and journalists and other leaders would read books like Understanding Variation by Donald Wheeler. Today the news is that unemployment claims went up, for the first time in 3 weeks. Analysts are now speculating that maybe the recovery is not as strong as it appears.

Excuse me. What are you saying? Are you saying that one upward blip can be extrapolated into a trend? Are you saying that because we flipped a coin 3 times and got heads (unemployment going down), and now we got a tail (unemployment going up) that our coin is defective? Are you saying that because temperatures were warmer than usual last week that we won't have winter?

One data point does not make a trend. We can't say the recovery is soft unless we know what the normal variation is on the out-of-work claims from week to week. Any result from week to week is going to be up or down (like heads or tails). Just because it goes up doesn't mean that a trend has reversed, when we didn't have a significant trend in the first place. 3 weeks of claims going down, analogous to coin flipping, could happen 1 in 8 times. The chance of it going down a fourth time is 1 in 16, unless there's a change in the system that creates unemployment claims (or better, creates jobs). Until we get to the odds of 1 in 64 (6 weeks in a row in the same direction--or some say, 1 in 256 is less risky for identifying a false trend) we can't say that we had an unemployment trend at all.

Please, Mr/Ms Economist and Mr/Ms Journalist, don't get confused and become Chicken Little thinking the economic sky is falling based on one piece of data that was going to show up normally. Read Wheeler's book to better understand all this.

I know kung fu

After reading this book (only took a couple of evenings) I feel like Keanu Reaves in The Matrix.

I've been studying Dr. Deming's system of profound knowledge, and the bit about understanding variation has been on my TODO list. This book nailed it with a crystal clear introduction to Statistical Process Control (SPC), which Dr. Deming promoted based on his learnings from statistician Walter Shewhart when they worked together at Bell Labs. As Dr. Deming pointed out, an eighth-grader could do this; it's not supposed to be hard, so take the negative reviews of this book with a grain of salt. If you already understand and use SPC, you won't gain nearly as much from this book as a newbie like myself.

I remember reading Deming's Out of the Crisis and thinking that the terminology around SPC could easily be confused. "Control" is a very loaded term. Dr. Wheeler has come up with a new terminology, replacing "Control" with "Predictability", among other things. This is going to make it much easier for me to talk about without creating misconceptions.

Thanks Dr. Wheeler for making this topic so approachable and for framing it in such a compelling way, and for not being afraid to promote an entirely new terminology even when your book publishing company is known as "SPC Publishing". This reinforces your own personal belief in continual improvement.

About the Author
Leslie Cabarga has been an illustrator, graphic designer and font designer since 1975. He has authored over two dozen books on design including The Designer's Guide to Color Combinations, The Designer's Guide to Global Color Combinations and Learn FontLab Fast. As an illustrator he's drawn covers for Time, Newsweek, Fortune and National Lampoon. He has designed numerous fonts, such as Magneto, Streamline, Raceway and the Love and Peace family of psychedelic fonts.

Crammed with valuable insights + hard-to-find information from a veteran

As a long-time typography- and design-lover, I was thrilled to discover this book.

Here's why:

1. Cabarga worked as a type designer before and after the digital age. As such, he has a strong foundation in the mechanics of typography.
2. He shares a historical perspective of type, which is critical to truly understanding what works and what doesn't, and why. (If you're not a history buff, don't worry. He touches on it just enough to offer clarity into why it's relevant now.)
3. If you've ever wondered why certain fonts just don't look right, but aren't sure why, you'll understand by the end of this book.
4. Graphic designers tend to be weak in the area of typography. EVERYONE needs a strong foundation in this area. This book is offers that foundation.
5. Before I read this book, I had a hard time translating what was in my mind into what appeared on the computer screen. This is HUGE for me. It has transformed my design.
6. If you get frustrated with beziér curves, Cabarga simplifies those with screen shots and concise tutorials.
7. Illustrator's pathfinder palette no longer makes me want to pull my hair out. (I'm pretty sure his tutorials will be helpful regardless of what version you are running.)
8. For anyone who's a newbie trying to break into the freelance world: You will also find answers and direction from someone who's been there.

And of course I read the negative reviews of this book. My thoughts:
1. READ the book. Note its CONTENT.
2. The book is divided into four parts. It has a table of contents to guide you if you are overwhelmed by the layout inside. Yes, the layout is random. The images are many (but necessary).
2a. I prefer a more spare design. I also detest $30 books with so much white space, so much focus on design, that most of the information is edited out to fit the book into xxx pages.
3. Yes, it is crammed with information. It's like getting four books in one. Does that suck? No, it does not.

I can't begin to do a review that will do this book justice. There's just too much content to cover.
In a nutshell: the book is easy to read, funny, informative, and worth every penny. And then some.

Do as he says, not as he does

The graphic design of this book is horrendous, and it has one of the most poorly designed covers I've ever seen. A lot of the examples inside are really goofy too, and really not something you want to imitate professionally.

Nevertheless, after giving this book a second shot, I've found it really invaluable. Apparently it's one of the few books (only book?) out there that teaches you, step by step, how to digitally modify and create type . He has some great illustrator tricks and teaches you how to do different lettering effects. It's really broken me out of my comfort zone--before I was stuck using existing typefaces, and now I can pretty effectively knock out hand-done lettering.

Candy store for creative minds (recommended)

Yummy! With humor, clear illustrations, and useful suggestions, Cabarga provides a wonderful resource for anyone who wants to be a letterer, illustrator, font or logo designer. But this hardbound book is not just for "wanabes." I found it includes comprehensive coverage of most everything learned throughout 30 years in the same disciplines along with new valuable timesaving tips. If I had the patience and tenacity to attempt such a compilation, it could be no more complete and not nearly as well presented as LOGO FONT & LETTERING BIBLE. My essay can now be reduced to three words: "What he says."

Leslie Cabarga, a talented illustrator and designer in his own right, does not limit examples to his own. World-renowned artists such as Gerard Huerta, Michael Doret, Tim Nikosey, Tony DiSpigna, and Seymour Chwast -- four dozen in all -- contribute to the wealth of inspiration. In the 1980's I had the privilege of working with uncles for one of these typography leaders -- producing over 200 hand-lettered packaging logos. It was there that I first saw an original triple outline inking of flourished letters by Gerard Huerta and was privileged to study a fraction of the techniques used.

Cabarga urges readers to become critics of their own work. This also reminds me of employment at the Huertas. A bulge could occur when joining curves using technical pens. After working on it for a while and thinking to myself "It's good enough," this infinitesimal area would be the first thing the creative director would point out. After admitting that I saw it too, he remarked, "If you saw it, why show it to me?" I quickly learned to be obsessively concerned about adjoining curves. Ink bulges may not be a problem today with digital lettering but there are other telltale signs of an amateur. Cabarga shows what to look for.

Your eyes are in for a tasty treat. Beautiful examples of calligraphy, and their influence on Roman font characters, are well demonstrated and discussed. But the book is by no means limited to calligraphy. Cabarga patiently differentiates cartooning, illustration, logo design, icon artwork, trademarks, and font design. LOGO FONT & LETTERING BIBLE compares digital tools such as the now defunct Macromedia FreeHand (my past favorite), Adobe Illustrator (which has supplanted the former), the seemingly forgotten Mac OS 9 version of Macromedia Fontographer (which in 2005 was integrated into the FontLab line of digital typography tools and updated to Mac OS X -- hooray!), and the preeminent FontLab.

LOGO FONT & LETTERING BIBLE covers the history of typography and encourages users to build a library of signage photos and magazine scraps for inspiration. Each subject I thought might be overlooked was eventually covered. Even esoteric techniques such as what I refer to as character ink reservoirs (called clog reduction on page 115) are here. Skeleton Strokes on page 152 demonstrates wonderful timesaving suggestions for digital lettering. Optical character spacing and stroke widths are discussed in detail beginning on page 112. Do you want to learn how to clean up the best scans for converting drawings to vector art? Jump over to page 158. Everything you want to know about Bezier (pronounced "Bez-zee-ay," thank you) curves but were afraid to ask is, well, practically everywhere but particularly in the section Bezier Curves for Cowards that begins on page 140.

Mississippi readers will approve. Just as I was thinking, the author needs to demonstrate how to arch text on a path (FreeHand did a better job than Illustrator), I turned to page 191 and, bam! There it is. The comparison on page 226 of residual shape differences in Illustrator and Fontographer after Bezier points are removed from a path is insightful. Not to leave you hanging, the book concludes with suggestions for getting work, building a portfolio, and negotiating fees. Additional resources and a helpful index rounds out 240 pages, which, like all trips to a candy store, seem to end too soon.

advanced comprehension
By lost in a box
I am a fisheries major, so my interests do not lie in the plant realm, at all. The course I am enrolled in is the ecology of algae, and it doesn't follow along with the book very well, but that's not really the problem. Falkowski's writing is full of so much jargon, it is very difficult to follow. It was written more for a graduate level, which this course is in part, but way too many big words are planted into each individual idea, making it a tough book to learn from. However, this said, the data and graphs used are relevant and seem to be concise for the concepts, and mistakes seem to be at a minimum. I just feel it isn't very approachable for an undergraduate, unless they have the time to go back and google terms and piece it together for conceptual understanding.

photosynthesis from the subatomic to the global level

This is an extremely interesting and useful book for anyone working with or needing knowledge of photosynthesis in algae and other aquatic plants. The emphasis on biophysics in the first few chapters sheds a whole new light on the processes of photosynthesis at the most basic level. The information is general and does not give extensive citations to current scientific work, but rather focuses on the historical research leading to current understanding of photosynthesis.
My one criticism so far is with the number of errors, typographical and other, in some of the graphs and figures, making it quite hard to figure out just what is what. Hopefully there will be a revised edition which will correct these.

This definitive text on aquatic photosynthesis reads like a good novel. It takes the reader on a scientific adventure through the fundamentals of light absorption and the biophysics of the light reactions all the way to the biogeochemistry and evolution. Interspersed throughout the book are particularly interesting anecdotes about everything from the molecular clock to hole burning. A scientific tour de force!
