The latest in parasitology

Mark Wiser's text "Protozoa and Human Disease" is a well crafted and easy to read introduction to infectious protozooa. Dr. Wiser covers all of the classical parasitological topics in a high-yield format and expertly connects the basic sciences with clinical and public health interventions. In addition (and more importantly), he has fully integrated the latest modern parasitological topics into this traditional framework. The text includes sections on molecular epidemiology, parasite genetics, and immunoparasitology. Each chapter follows the same basic layout (akin to the WHO Control of Communicable Diseases Manual) organized along a taxonomic scheme. The book is a bit pricey for a trichrome paperback (black and white with blue). But, to its credit, it sets a new standard.

"Protozoa and Human Disease" represents the latest text from the faculty of tropical medicine at the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. The school has a venerable history of crafting the some of the finest texts on parasitology beginning in the 1930's with Faust's Human Helminthology. If one was interested in the traditional paring of a textbook with an atlas then I would fully recommend the indispensable Atlas of Human Parasitology.

About the Author
Martha L. Abell and James P. In addition, they have given numerous presentations on Mathematica, throughout the United States and abroad. Statistics with Mathematica

Statistics with Mathematica (which I'll refer to as "SwM") is a book for someone who knows something about Mathematica and something about statistics--the more known, the better. SwM is neither a comprehensive tutorial on Mathematica nor on statistics. Rather, SwM illustrates by example how to perform statistical operations and produce graphs using Mathematica. SwM is both a tutorial and a reference book. SwM was written for Version 3 (or later) of Mathematica, although one can purportedly squeak by with Version 2.2.
A word of advice: Before you buy this book, decide whether you have some compelling reason to perform statistical analyses and make graphs using Mathematica, as opposed to, say, Excel.
I found the large number of typos, oversights, and the poor integration of the accompanying CD quite annoying. To the reader familiar with Mathematica, many of the typos are glaring and easy to correct. Other typos, such as incorrect page numbers listed in the index, are more problematic.
Knowledge of Mathematica will also see you through most of the oversights. For example, if you already understand why you must first load a Mathematica Standard Add-on Package before attempting to use one of its functions, you will not need such a reminder in SwM. A reminder is given, but many pages too late.
SwM's preface promises that all Mathematica input is included on the accompanying CD. That is simply not so--some files referred to in the text are not on the CD. However, if you don't mind typing a few missing files, you can make them yourself. The CD, oddly titled "UNTITLED_CD", contains two folders and a total of 60 files. Most files are cryptically named and are not referenced in the text nor vice versa. That's where the fun begins. The SwM text will refer you to an author-defined procedure, tell you to locate it on the CD, but fail to mention the name of the requisite CD file.
A redeeming feature of SwM is the collection of ready-to-use author-defined procedures available to the reader. Some are simple and obvious, while others, such the "Box and Whisker" plotters, would require some effort to write from scratch. The authors' procedures help both by extending the use of Mathematica's add-ons and by illustrating how one might write or modify such procedures.
SwM includes a chapter on data manipulation that illustrates how to transfer data from a text file to Mathematica list variables where the data can be worked upon. SwM, however, does not address how to transfer data from Excel or other commonly used data base applications.
SwM covers a wide gamut of statistical tools including descriptive statistics, univariate and multivariate methods, data smoothing and time series, probability and probability distributions, simulation, inferential procedures, analysis of variance, and regression and correlation, as well as the graphic representation of data and its attributes.
As far as I know, SwM is the only book of its kind that is devoted to statistical analysis via Mathematica. While sloppy editing does leave SwM frustrating to use, the reader could reorganize and index the CD's Notebook files and eventually find SwM to be a favorite reference.

Be forewarned

This book is slightly useful for people who know a little about Mathematica and more about statistics. The book is moderately useful in gaining some idea about how to go about doing statistics with Mathematica.

However, I hope that the editors involved with the publication of this text from Academic Press have all gone back to work at something that does not require eyesight and an ability to read simple words. Others have mentioned the ubiquitous errors. I have never encountered a published final text that is more rife with errors. I've used Mathematica to actually calculate the number of errors in the text (couldn't do it in my head), and the answer is 1.34252x10^14. There are few pages that do not contain at least one error, some, numerous. For example, on page 83 the output of has 6.43041

Makes metal forming look like childsplay

My review is from the perspective of a rank beginner in forging and forming. The authors have succeeded in breaking down each technique one needs to master before moving on to pieces of increasing complexity. While there are metalsmithing books out there, this one is outstanding and I think fills a void. A few more inspirational examples would be nice, but overall the clarity of instruction is outstanding. Worth every penny.

A must for anticlastic raising

Having been TA ( teaching assisant) to Cynthia Eid this summer, I saw all of the tools, stakes and samples that are listed in the book. It is a great reference book if you have taken a raising workshop or learned to do anticlastic raising, so that you can refer back to the book on what you know or needed a refresher. Extra tips, how to modify tools, where to get them, all that is included, which a lot of books don't necessary offer. Even how to make your own stakes tips are included.

I still haven't received my Amazon copy yet, but was able to buy one directly from Cynthia ( we teach at the same school), so I was able to start reading and referring to it.

Definitely an addition to your jewelry/metalsmithing libary.

I use this lovely, informative and ever growing book for my best Friends to give them the pleasure to "knowingly" drink a good bootle of wine wherever they are at home. None of my Friends has ever had a critical remark in roughly 20 years.

My favorite book

I buy it from 1987. It became around 2 times of the thickness of an original book. I dropped in at the bookstore at every trip to the United States before not the Amazon and bought it because there was a bookstore at the airport when it was SFO. Because it is update every year, the contents hardly change, but, from around 2000 when garage wine of Bordeaux has begun to become the topic, the publication of the wine of the kind feels like having begun. Because, as is expected, in comparison with R parka it is a British owner, an important point is put for the evaluation of classic wine. How many years can you update the back? I want you to be well forever.

Really useful

Really useful book. It goes country by country and lists the many growers and marks them. I have used it a few times before going out to eat to have a look at a wine list on-line, checking it against this book and deciding my wine before I even leave the house. This has saved me money and pointed me towards some good discoveries. It is the size of an oversize pocket diary so technically you could carry it with you, but it is small and in restaurant lighting you may be squinting to read the detail, best to plan ahead.
There is more to this than a country by country guide but what differentiates it is actually the country/winery writes ups, the rest is fairly standard stuff, but I have found the write ups invaluable
