It required 14 years of work from his author, who not only wrote all the texts, but also did more than 400 drawings representing all the cars from all the significant teams having entered the Formula One championship in the past 54 years! This unique feature allows the readers to see at a glance the evolution of all the Williams cars, for instance, since the creation of the team.  This huge and heavy (more than 10 pounds) box, with two volumes in fabric-style covers also features more than 1200 photographs, some of them exclusive from the collection of Bernard Cahier, the famous photographer from the '50s.  In its last section, the book also gives comprehensive results of all the Grands Prix of the history of F1, from 1950 until today. It features all the lap charts of all the races - despite the fact that the FIA (the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile) itself thought that these lap charts did not exist before 1958!  This third edition is entirely updated after the end of the 2006 season. Its page layout has also been improved since the first two editions to put more emphasis on the pictures. In France, the book will be published in its fifth edition this year. It won the prestigious award "Grand Prix du Livre" from the Automobile Festival of Chamonix.

About the Author
Nigel Roebuck (born in 1946, in Manchester, Lancashire, England) is an English journalist. Since 1971 he has reported on Formula One, and is considered one of the sport's most influential writers.  Roebuck continues to write for Autosport, plus Autoweek in the USA and a retrospective column in Motorsport magazine. His flowing, laconic and self effacing style is matched only by its insightfulness, honesty and humor, and occasional, heavy-handed reference to UK party politics. In 1982 Roebuck drove a Formula One Renault turbo at Circuit Paul Ricard in France.

A great addition to any fans library

A lot of time and research has gone into this huge volume which in itself deserves 5 stars, except that there are many irritating errors throughout which may be due to the translation from French to English. There are many sentences which just stop in mid sentence and become very irritating after a while. It seems there was no proof reading done before publication. It also boasts a complete driver by driver line up, which I thought would include every F1 driver to date, but only includes the more prominent ones. It does however have a complete list of all teams that have raced in F1 with a complete chapter on each with drawings of all the teams cars raced as well as all the circuits old and new. All in all this is still a must have for any F1 fan.

Excellent translations

This is a very nice selection of Gogol's greatest stories and plays, capably translated by Christopher English. The translations read far better than other recent versions by Wilks (for Penguin) and Pevear and Volokhonsky (for Vintage). Pevear and Volokhonsky are fine translators, but their more literal approach works better for Dostoevsky and Tolstoy than it does for Gogol. Christopher English translates with a more flowing and rhetorical style that matches the satirical insanity of Gogol. "Diary of a Madman" reads particularly well.

Btw, Robert Maguire did the sterling Penguin Dead Souls, but to the best of my knowledge he never translated Gogol's stories.

Being in the world

This volume would be an excellent choice for anyone looking to get an introduction to Russian literature and Russian realism / existentialism more generally. For this reviewer, highlights include "The Government Inspector", and from the Petersburg Tales, "Nevsky Prospect" and "The Overcoat".

"The Government Inspector" gives a humorous look at corruption in the Russian provinces during the mid-19th century. Reading this play you’ll feel like the plot is something you’ve read or seen before and that’s probably the case, but Gogol was the first to write such a tale. "The Overcoat" as deals with a Petersburg bureaucrat and the one thing that makes his life worth living; a coat. "Nevsky Prospect" highlights two ways in which to deal with the reality of pursuing women romantically. It gives a detailed and unique perspective of two men lusting after two different women. One man’s approach ends in death, the other man’s a near death; fascinating to say the least!

Some readers may grow impatient with Gogol's plots, for they typically unfold at a slow pace. For patient readers, however, they'll likely find Gogol's plots thought-provoking in their underlying statements about perception and how much it relates to one's overall sense of being in the world.

This book is enlightening and inspiring!

As someone who has a hard time decluttering and letting go of "stuff" that doesn't serve me, I found Laura Benko's book a great motivator. But it is so much more than that, with fascinating, real-life, modern examples of how the ways in which we manage and care for our space can affect everything from our physical health to our emotional well-being. Laura reveals how our home is a reflection of our own inner workings, including our fears and insecurities, and she teaches us how to recognize and free ourselves from those manifestations in practical, concrete ways. This is as much a book about psychology, intention and lifestyle as it is about space, and I learned a lot about myself while reading it. Laura's writing style is easy and approachable, whether she's relaying complex ideas or fun, useful tips. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in moving through the world in a more mindful, healthy way.

Gets the Energy Flowing in Your Home!

Reading this book feels like talking to a friend--Laura shares stories about clients she's worked with, so it's easy to imagine how changes can be made within your own home. By giving the reader a clear understanding of Feng Shui, Laura explains the significance of the design suggestions she shares throughout this treasure of a book. The photos are gorgeous and inspiring, yet the overall feeling is one of peaceful acceptance--like there are no hard and fast "right" or "wrong" answers, but here are the directions to help get the energy flowing freely throughout your living space, so why not try moving this over here or there, and see if things start to feel better once you do? I cleared out so much clutter after reading this book, it was like a weight lifted off me! You'll be amazed at how much small changes can have enormous impacts! This book is my go-to gift for the people I love--no matter how big or small your home is, this book is a must-have to make the most of your space.

A must read and reference too ...

Just finished reading this informative, easy reading, non stop textbook of knowledge. The Holistic Home: Feng Shui for Mind, Body, Spirit and Space has changed my life. Sounds like an old cliché, but this feel good book has definitely changed my outlook as I see my home, sense my spirit, and listen to my mind. The fire in me is back! The glow in my eyes see how beautiful our lives are ever changing; just trust your instincts. I have highlighted key suggestions so I can reference it in my quest of each new tomorrow. I will be having a garage sale in my community this month; perfect time to get rid of my guilt saving tchotchkes; stopping the clutter! This author shared her most trying medical moments to the reader; forward to today's running a successful business while still being a lecturer, wife and mother. She has incorporated her life's journey into each chapter and lets the reader into her space. I especially enjoyed the follow up moments when this author shared her clients most recent life style changes. We are only a speck in this universe; why not continue to feel good about ourselves while learning and loving life. This author has accomplished an ongoing plan in this book. A must read and useful reference tool.

I Like All of These Daily Language Books

I really like these daily language books. Our daughter is an ELL and really needs additional help with the basics of the English Language. I originally bought her Grade 3, but decided to back her up to the Grade 1 book due to her having a bit of difficulty with some of the vocabulary words at that level. She is an older adopted child and is pretty much learning English from the ground up, so we go through the weekly lessons, and I explain the rules behind it. She is learning some English at school, but there just isn't enough time for the school to go through everything that she needs to learn, so I supplement at home with this book. I really like it and, more importantly, she feels comfortable with it.

Great Resource

This book has a daily language review for each school day. There are so many grammar concepts included I cannot name them all. I am pleased with how children are able to engage in the use of different concepts together verses the focus on once concept at a time. My son has been able to see how capitalizing the first word in a sentence is just as important as the use of proper punctuation.
There are no pictures however the book includes a section at the end of each week for the child to keep track of how many they get correct for each day of the week. This has been encouragement for my child and he seems to feel as though he is helping me keep track of his progress.

Fabulous Extension!

I teach 1st and 2nd grade and I didn't feel my students were getting enough grammar practice in the language arts curriculum. These have been GREAT! I bought the 1st grade book also. A lot of the kids really enjoy doing these. They're simple but get the job done. I'm very impressed with how much more my students have learned this year than the year before I had these books. Highly recommend!

Journalist and explorer William Seabrook (1884–1945) possessed a fascination with the occult that led him across the globe to study magic rituals, train as a witch doctor, and sample human flesh. In addition to publishing more than a dozen books, he wrote for The New York Times, Cosmopolitan, Reader's Digest, and Vanity Fair.

A mixed bag

This book is good and bad. The chapters on zombies and Voodoo rituals are really fascinating. In most cases, Mr. Seabrook was the first white person to see many of those things firsthand and his accounts are very detailed. Later in the book, however, the narrative takes a bad turn. The chapters on Haitian culture and race are very narrow-minded and outright racist. I realize this was a different time when people were ignorant, but it is hard to read such blatant racial prejudice. If you're a fan of zombies or the rituals of other religions, the early chapters are worth reading, though.
