Different Viewpoint

This is an excellent book that I would recommend to anyone seeking answers regarding the disturbing discrepancies in the Bible.

I have found a several good laughs through the years as I watch Christian apologists try to reconcile the different points of view contained within the holy book. It's like watching a game of twister as the positions become more and more ridiculous.

In addition, recent books such as Misquoting Jesus: The Story Behind Who Changed the Bible and Why (Plus)and Jesus, Interrupted: Revealing the Hidden Contradictions in the Bible (And Why We Don't Know About Them) have taken the position that the contradictions do not need defense but should be seen as evidence that the bible should be summarily dismissed as a path to God.

Dr. Helms takes neither of these approaches but rather the course of understanding the writings within their cultural and historical context. This is a refreshing view indeed.

While I will continue to purchase and enjoy the work of Bart Ehrman, I will also keep Dr. Helms on my 'must buy' list for his compelling and educational take on the many mysteries contained within our sacred texts.

Well referenced, solid piece of scholarship

Ever since I had Dr. Helms as a professor at ASU for the Bible As Literature course I have been fascinated with this subject. Helms had such a firm grasp of his knowledge that I knew his books would be engaging and insightful. This book is no exception as he tackled with ease this heavy subject.

He shows us easily where the origins of the Old Testament came from and how the biblia, or books, came to fruition, how the stories are collections of mythologies and folk tales accumulated over hundreds if not thousands of years. What is even more readily apparent is how the New Testament authors raped and pillaged the Jewish Torah, making it the Old Testament, in order to form and create the New Testament and show that Jesus is the messiah prophesied many years before. The problem, and Helms makes this extremely clear, is that the books were not eyewitness accounts, except for maybe Mark, who would have been very young, and so everything is written from second, third and so on perspective. The gospels were that specific authors beliefs and dreams on how everything should have happened, ultimately hoping to usurp all the written work and leave theirs as the authority. In editing, changing, attacking each gospel and writing it how they believed it to be so they ultimately showed, through the many varied contradictions, that the bible is nothing more than a collection of fictional stories.

Additionally, Helms touches upon prophecies and how each author handled them. They were given credence and power because it seemed that what they were writing upon actually did come true, when in fact it is the author re-writing the history of their past and passing it off as though they are predicting the future hundreds of years down the road. Daniel predicted the apocalypse would come with Alexander the Great and the schism of his empire. But when that didn't happen it had to be re-written, this time to reflect the Roman empire and the fall of Jerusalem during the Jewish-Roman wars. When that didn't happen it was re-written again, again. Thus is prophecy and will continue to be when related to religion.

For the nay-sayers all I can say is read the book. Helms doesn't make claims without support. His book is heavily referenced so that you yourself could go those sections of the bible and see for yourself. Helms makes a very convincing argument and is so well supported that only the blind would not be able to see the truth behind his scholarship. Although this is perhaps a bit brief and could do well as a much larger book, I would certainly recommend this book to anyone interested, and if you attend ASU I would definitely recommend taking his classes.

*Side note: I noticed the tags that people have entered for this and it is kind of funny. Atheist: Is this simply because he studied the bible more so than Christians have and actually read it for what it was? Because Helms is in fact a practicing Christian (Presbyterian if I remember correctly). Someone who criticizes the bible or points out inaccuracies is most certainly not an atheist from that alone. Same goes for Skeptic and Skepticism. Holocaust? Huh?*

The Bible Against Itself

Seldom can you encounter a book that present an unbiased analysis from religion. With a laser like lucidity Mr. McCraw goes around presenting all the points that he uses as examples of the massive confrontation that took place between the Bible writers.

The book is an excellent read well written without annoying anyone except fundamentalist that might get insulted. It is divided into 10 Chapter, each of them dealing with a different but very interesting topic.

This is a short but very compelling book that should be on every serious religion researcher.

Chairs are one of the most useful beautiful sexiful things in the world. Yes, they turn me on. I love this book. So many reasons, but I am going to be brief (please, applaud):

Yes, sure.
= If you are looking for a guide with plenty of explanations, a professional approach to chair design and more details about the designers and the history of each item, or clear design periods go elsewhere.
= The book starts from the 19th century, so if you love, say, Roman Empire chairs, this is not for you.
= The books is does limit itself to the 20th century so no designs from year 2000. Pity. I miss the awesome chairs of contemporary designers British Grazier-Jones and Spaniard Maximo Riera, as other contemporary designers.
= The book devotes little space to the 1980s and 1890s compared to other periods.
= Short in Asian designers.

Wonderfully done

Inclusive, illustrated, excellent review of design choices across the ages. It helped me in a project I had to design a chair or stool for a specific purpose in furnishing our new home. Fun to read and look at the design possibilities across the years. Would be a fine reference for someone who needed to understand the different style trends in furniture. Amazon supplied it in record time.

About the Author
Jane Kroger is Professor of Psychology, University of Tromsø, in Tromsø, Norway. She holds a Ph.D. in Child Development. She has published numerous theoretical and research articles on issues of identity and is author of Identity in Adolescence: The Balance between Self and Other, 3rd edition and editor of Discussions on Ego Identity. She has been a visiting scholar at the Erik H. and Joan M. Erikson Center at Harvard University and also at the Henry A. Murray Center for the Study of Lives. She is currently president of the Society for Research on Identity Formation.

In Identity Development: Adolescence through Adulthood, Kroger (2000) focuses on the early, middle, and late periods of both adolescence and adulthood. She not only provides research which is applicable to Erikson�s psychosocial theory of development, but also offers her own view points in regards to this premise. Furthermore, Kroger writes of the necessity for additional studies concerning Erikson�s psychosocial point of view of each of the phases of life addressed.
To begin, this book is immediately intriguing due to its use of Erikson�s psychosocial theory. Of all the developmental theories, this must be the one which includes the most comprehensive look at development throughout the lifespan. By using challenges that are faced during particular phases of development, Erikson specifically outlines developmental tasks that must be completed as well as those which must be avoided.
Kroger separates the text into three parts, devoting Part I to the discussion of perceptions of the wholism of identity. Erikson is given credit for the original idea of such wholistic identity perspectives. His theory encompasses the suggestion that the attainment of an identity is a mission that must be fulfilled during adolescence in order to pursue and complete additional tasks in adulthood. In addition to Erikson�s theory, Kroger discusses other frameworks in which the study of identity may be approached.
In Part II, Kroger discusses adolescence. This part is divided into segments pertaining to early adolescence, middle adolescence, and late adolescence. She begins each segment by discussing the biological, psychological, and societal influences that accompany the three stages of adolescence. Next, she discusses developmental tasks that are faced during adolescence and the way in which these tasks affect identity development. Some of these specific developmental tasks are puberty, sexuality, vocation decisions, and the development of values. Finally, at the end of each segment, Kroger discusses specific contexts that affect identity development. Each context is viewed in relation to the stage of adolescence being studied. Specific contexts include family, friendships and peer groups, and educational and work settings.
The final part of the text is set up quite similar to Part II. However, in Part III, Kroger discusses early adulthood, middle adulthood, and late adulthood. Biological, psychological, and societal influences pertaining to each stage of adulthood are discussed at the beginning of each segment. Developmental tasks faced during the three stages of adulthood are also discussed, including identity, intimacy, generativity, and integrity. Finally, Kroger discusses specific contexts affecting the development of identity during adulthood. These contexts include the family and social network, the career, and association with one�s community.
The way in which Kroger designs the framework for her text is logical and allows for easy comprehension. By designing Part II and Part III to be so similar, one is able to read the text in an orderly fashion that allows for easier understanding. At the end of both of these parts, Kroger discusses, in depth, selected issues that may have an effect on identity development during adolescence and/or adulthood. Some of these specific issues include adoption, ethnicity, the loss of an intimate relationship, and infertility. This is certainly the most interesting part of the text. While reading this section, one is simply able to see how specific issues (even as tiny as they may appear) can have a profound effect on identity development.
According to Kroger (2000), the main point of Identity Development: Adolescence through Adulthood is to examine �how my biology, psychology, and society interact to produce that subjective sense of the person who is �genuinely me�� as well as �how I can meaningfully express who I am� in social contexts (p. 7). She presents answers to these questions given by individuals in each stage of development discussed. This not only adds character to the text, but also aids in the understanding of how Erikson�s stages apply to the development of identity.
One might note that the responses to the afore-mentioned questions change significantly during each stage of development. This illustrates the development of identity in relation to specific tasks which are being faced during that stage. Finally, this understanding may aid in the realization that each task is dependent upon the completion of another. In other words, much like development itself, Kroger�s text consists of parts that build upon one another to make a single completion.

Nice to know, but this is one economist who won't change your life

It was a good effort but the author tried to make J R McCullogh seem like a very important part of classical economics and McCullogh's impact simply doesn't show. Technically the book is written well in regards to it's economic focus and explanations, this author is a very good writer. I did find his style a bit strange in describing McCullogh's life in phases. Even though the book is written well for it's economics information, it failed to impress me that McCullogh had much of an impact on economics. He was "the first" professional economist and that is important but his actual contributions seemed to always slip into the wake of Adam Smith and David Ricardo, flipping between both of their "original thoughts". In summary, not a book that will add much to your economic knowledge but it's not a difficult read or does it take too much time to complete.

About the Author
A former chapter president of the Long Island Pagans, John Hall has done time in the state pen, as well as Penn State, where he taught history, American studies, rhetoric, and mathematics. He also worked as bouncer, bartender, bookmaker, stonemason, professional gambler, law clerk, and freelance journalist. He has written over 400 syndicated opinion columns, which have appeared in over a dozen newspapers, including the Houston Post and Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He has raised seven children, half the time as a single parent. He currently lives in a 127-year-old dilapidated farmhouse in the Appalachian Mountains, where he seeks what George Jean Nathan once described as the three essentials of life: reasonable well prepared food, a moderately alcoholic diet, and the amiable company of amiable women.

Superb Effort

"Riding on the Edge" is, IMHO, the finest work of 1%er biker literature on the stands today. Written by an Old School biker and original member of the Pagans MC, this is a thoughtful, respectful and captivating story of what it was like to be a 1960s motorcycle outlaw.

Written by John Hall, today a professional journalist and academic, Hall's book eclipses Sonny Barger's very successful effort (Hell's Angel) and, when compared, makes a mockery of Ruben "Doc" Cavazo's recent book about himself (oh, and the Mongols MC, too).

"Riding" is a wonderful read with the best outlaw biker book cover on the stands to date. Well worth the purchase.

A Unique Work

This is certainly the most well-written book by an ex-insider that was close to or at the top of one of the major 1% clubs. John Hall is a literate guy who seems to borrow some of his style from Hunter S. Thompson among others. Unlike some of the drivel that is being pumped out by some real and imagined ex-outlaws, Hall's work is superbly readable.

The only knock I have on it, and it's a Catch-22 endured by all authors in Hall's position, is that he really isn't in a position to tell us what we want to hear about some of the more "outlaw" aspects of his life with the club. He isn't going to implicate himself or others. Doc Cavazos' book about the Mongols has the same issue - there are stories to tell, but what can he do without harming his brothers? In this vein, I would say that Sonny Barger's book "Hells Angel" comes the closest to getting at the "meat." But Sonny has a huge advantage because of the ability to allude to untold published articles, stories, books, truths, untruths, etc. about the Hells Angels. There is so much out there for Sonny to address that he doesn't run the risk of exposing anything new. John Hall doesn't have that luxury.

In addition, Hall, like Cavazos, exhibits very little ego in this writing. This makes for what seems to be pretty honest, if a bit bland, account of the life as a club leader.

Also, I would have to say that the knock Hall tosses in at the end about people like Yves Lavigne and Anthony Tait is a bit clumsy, because it is out of place. But he is dead on.

This is your book if you want to experience real writing while getting an excellent account of the development of the Pagans as a club, and maybe a little history of the people and culture of eastern Pennsylvania thrown in as a bonus!

Fact and Fiction

In 2006 John Hall's literary agent James Fitzgerald of New York contacted us about the book. At that time Fitzgerald was informed that John Hall in fact did not have authorization to write, print or publish any thing about the Pagan's MC. John Hall has never contacted the club at all to seek authorization. The book is interesting to read for the most part, however it is by no means a acurate and true account of the 1 1/2 years that John Hall was a member of the club. Not only is it an exageration of his own status and position within the club, but also certain alleged events written of in the book are totally fictional and never happened. For the most part he dropped names of men that are dead now, however others are still alive and atest to the false nature of this personal account of John Hall. John Hall was nothing more than a spoke in a wheel. John Hall is not a original member of the club and does not have the respect or honor that position would grant.
