Both architecture and fashion are based on the human body and on ideas of space, volume, and movement. Each functions as shelter or wrapping for the body—a mediating layer between the body and the environment—and can express personal, political, and cultural identity.

Fashion designers and architects share much of the same vocabulary and similar techniques of construction: pinning, darting, folding, wrapping, draping. Fashion designers have always been able to achieve complex, often architectonic garments using fabric. Today, many architects are looking to fashion and techniques of tailoring as they attempt to achieve more and more complex forms using hard materials.

The book focuses on the period 1980 to the present and includes forty-six architects and fashion designers from the United States, Europe, and Japan. The featured designers include Issey Miyake, Junya Watanabe, Alexander McQueen, Hussein Chalayan, and Vivienne Westwood, among others. The architects include Herzog & de Meuron, Zaha Hadid, Frank Gehry, and Eisenman Architects. 530 illustrations, 500 in color.

BUY FOR LESS AT MOCA

FYI...you can still purchase this book online (or in person) at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angelos brand new for 85.00. Unfortunately there's a 20$ shipping fee plus tax brought the total to 113.something. But that still beats 194 by 80$. I know its still not that cheap but it is better. Just a heads up for all the hungry art lovers out there.

P.S when you find a book on here you must have but don't like the inflated price, try finding out who the publisher is and check their site, sometimes the book is still available for the original price.

I apologize for not actually reviewing the book, I will when I get it, I just didn't want anyone to pay more than they had to.

What an incredible catalogue of highly inventive, genius artists' work! A must-have for anyone interested in truly avant garde design- especially clothing. I even was turned on to a designer I wasn't familiar with and now we're corresponding. Just a beautiful, highest quality publication- a real collector's item. I promise, whether or not you were lucky enough to see the London exhibit, you'll be thrilled and inspired by the catalogue.

Criticism includes significant statements on Tennyson as well as interpretations of the major poems. A special feature is Georg Roppen's essay on Tennyson and the theory of evolution. Robert W. Hill, Jr. is Professor of English at Middlebury College. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard and was the recipient of a John Harvard honorary scholarship. He has taught previously at Harvard and at Amherst.

Editorial qualms

As editor of this collection, Robert W. Hill has, I feel, made some rather poor choices. For instance, in the Preface he audaciously writes that he removed "indisputably 'bad'" poems. In this capacity, he omitted "Godiva" -- a great loss -- as well as many charming short verses, well represented in other collections.

Additionally, although he claims deliberately not to have modernized Tennyson's spelling, he nevertheless Americanizes both spelling and punctuation (e.g. "honor" instead of "honour"; consistent placement of the full stop within quotation marks; and so on). This badly affects the very Englishness of Tennyson's voice, I should think.

I would recommend the edition for its highly informed annotations, but not as a source for the poems themselves.

Sloppy editing

Do not buy this book. I adopted it as a text book for a course I am teaching but have found typos in just about every poem I have read in it. Some you can figure out:
"How sweet--while warn airs lull us, blowling lowly"
"Warn" is supposed to be "warm." But others are really confusing:
"Thro' many a women acanthus-wreath divine!"
"Women" is supposed to be "woven." I checked these in the first edition of the Norton Critical--the first edition has the correct lines. I guess Norton just scanned the first edition and put it on the shelves as a second "edition" without even editing it.
Very sloppy work--please don't buy the book. The texts are well selected--it is nice to have The Princess available. And the critical readings are also well chosen. But the texts are hardly readible.

Over the past two decades, governments have delegated extensive regulatory authority to international private-sector organizations. This internationalization and privatization of rule making has been motivated not only by the economic benefits of common rules for global markets, but also by the realization that government regulators often lack the expertise and resources to deal with increasingly complex and urgent regulatory tasks. The New Global Rulers examines who writes the rules in international private organizations, as well as who wins, who loses--and why.

Tim Büthe and Walter Mattli examine three powerful global private regulators: the International Accounting Standards Board, which develops financial reporting rules used by corporations in more than a hundred countries; and the International Organization for Standardization and the International Electrotechnical Commission, which account for 85 percent of all international product standards. Büthe and Mattli offer both a new framework for understanding global private regulation and detailed empirical analyses of such regulation based on multi-country, multi-industry business surveys. They find that global rule making by technical experts is highly political, and that even though rule making has shifted to the international level, domestic institutions remain crucial. Influence in this form of global private governance is not a function of the economic power of states, but of the ability of domestic standard-setters to provide timely information and speak with a single voice. Büthe and Mattli show how domestic institutions' abilities differ, particularly between the two main standardization players, the United States and Europe.

About the Author

Agnès Bénassy-Quéré is the Director of the CEPII, the French leading research institute in international economics, and a Professor at University Paris-Ouest (on leave). She is a member of France's Commission Economique de la Nation and also teaches at Ecole Polytechnique. Her research interests focus on the international monetary system and European macroeconomic policy.

Benoit Coeuré teaches international economics and economic policy at École polytechnique in Paris. He has served in various official positions in the French government including as the CEO of France's debt management office, Agence France Trésor and as France's deputy deputy to the G-7 and G-20. He has also been the co-President of the Paris Club. Benoît Coeuré has authored articles and books on economic policy, the international monetary system and the economics of European integration.

Since January 2002, Pierre Jacquet has been executive director (in charge of strategy) and chief economist at the French Development Agency (AFD). He was formerly deputy director of the French Institute of International Relations (IFRI) and chief editor of IFRI's quarterly review Politique Etrangère. He is professor of international economics and chairman of the department of economics and finance at the Ecole des Ponts-ParisTech and a guest professor in executive programs at the French business school INSEAD. His fields of interest include globalization, international monetary and financial issues, trade policies and negotiations, economic policy and development.

Jean Pisani-Ferry is the Director of Bruegel, the Brussels-based economic think tank, and a professor of economics with Université Paris-Dauphine. He has had a career in research and policy, both in France and at European level. He has been Executive President of the French PM's Council of Economic Analysis, Senior Economic Adviser to the French Minister of Finance, Director of CEPII, the French institute for international economics, and Economic Adviser with the European Commission. He has a regular column in Le Monde and Handelsblatt.

Great purchase

I am new to the field of economics, and I usually don't like to take the road everyone else takes, I prefer reaching things indirectly.
Instead of buying Mankiw, etc., and those s***ty books, this was a great choice.

This book exists, not in an abstract plane void of any prescriptive and explanatory power, but at the intersection of the State and the domestic economy.

I highly recommend it.
