About the Author
Nathan Emery is senior lecturer in cognitive biology at Queen Mary University of London. His research interests focus on what corvids, apes, and parrots understand about their social and physical worlds, especially others' mental states, insight, and imagination, as well as the psychology and evolution of innovation and creativity. He is currently working with the ravens at the Tower of London. He is the coeditor of Social Intelligence: From Brain to Culture and The Cognitive Neuroscience of Social Behaviour, and is on the editorial board of the journals Animal Cognition and Journal of Comparative Psychology. He is the author of more than eighty publications, including papers in Nature, Science, and Current Biology. His work has been extensively covered by international newspapers and magazines, in books, and on TV.

All Package and All Goods, Too

It would be easy to be seduced by the brilliant layout and design of this book, especially in the Kindle version. It is visually more appealing than any electronic book I have ever seen. But that would short-change Nathan Emery's research and presentation of information considerably. This book is a valuable addition to any library.

Combines a nice review of neuropsychological avian studies with neuroanatomy.
However, the neuroanatomical diagrams really need to be improved - they resemble a Tokyo subway map!
Further, the formating is almost incompatible with the Kindle reader. The anatomic descriptions are matched with the diagrams on what is most likely the facing page on the paper book.
It's more like reading a massively enlarged PDF on a computer screen. Also, if you thumb or finger touches the lower edge, you get some kind of page menu.
If you're interested, buy the book, NOT the Kindle edition!

A Valuable Contribution to the Understanding of Intelligence

This book is, as far as I know, unique in its subject: Bird intelligence. Such a book is long overdue since much research progress has been made. It is also very important in its own right and for the light it sheds on human and other animal intelligence. The author, Nathan Emery has conducted extensive research in the area. The book is written for the general reader and is greatly enhanced by its numerous splendid illustrations.

Despite its strong points, there are features of the book that I feel detract from its effectiveness. Each of the seven chapters is chopped up into subtopics that are only loosely linked together, so one feels one is reading a series of (very) short stories rather than a continuous narrative. Furthermore, it appears that a rather arbitrary and unhelpful structure has been imposed on the subtopics, perhaps by the book designer: With a few exceptions, each subtopic is confined to one double page. This is helpful in integrating text and illustrations but one often feels that the subject has been left unfinished because of the limited space available for the text. Also, for all who do not have perfect vision, reading the small, low contrast font is a strain.

One aspect of the content troubled me: Many of the intelligence tests that were described were in laboratory conditions using man-made objects, like ice cube trays and plastic tubes. This, it seems to me, immediately puts the avian subject at a disadvantage when compared to a human. We are familiar with the materials and purposes of such equipment, a bird is not. As a contrast, it would be instructive to take an urban human to New Caledonia and to test his or her ability to extract grubs from awkward locations in trees using only the natural materials of the area. I would be surprised if our human subject comes close to the twig tools carefully fashioned by the local crows. Dr. Nathan does not discuss this objection.

For too long, humans have been reluctant to admit that we share intelligence widely and deeply with the rest of the animal kingdom. This book shows that many species of birds are surprisingly intelligent, in doing so it should make us more respectful of our fellow creatures.

Need For Medical Tests

This book is good because it reaffirms that instead of just prescribing dangerous drugs, psychiatrists should run standard medical tests. Many of the symptoms of which patients complain are caused by endocrine, allergy or other physical ailments that are not treated with psychiatric drugs but just worsen.

great story, great history/heritage

I recommend this book.
First, this is an interesting adventure/ set of adventures of ppl of long ago. Fun to read. The first half is mythical and has magical and religious elements (of pre-christian viking religion) with queer beasts, magical talismans and visiting gods. The second half is semi-historical with ppl who really lived in real places, and others who are speculated to be real ppl but their names while similar are different and so they may be fictional. However there is still some magic, and the ppl are often coexisting with other ppl from different eras, and so not really historical.)

Second, these tales show us (to some extent) how the ppl of old lived and thought and gives us a piece of our pre-Christian heritage. pretty much any citizen of UK and most of US are going to be related to the vikings). Maybe you don't need that history, but our culture is so awash in Roman and Greek culture, philosophy and myth (even tho we don't grow up on those writings as much as the generations up to 50 yrs ago did, so much language, expressions etc stem from there), not to mention the weight of Christian culture and thinking (nothing wrong with it, but again, it's not stories of N Euro ppl), that we have really forgotten a part of our heritage. It's really a big blank space.

Third, these old norse stories in addition to being an exciting adventure, have their share of wisdom about life in them as much as any of the old stories of the Gr/Roman/ Christian ones do.

I haven't read any other translation, and can't read the original, so I can't comment on the translation, but it reads well and clearly with easy to find notes that clarify or enlarge on the story/text. There are good essays/ appendices explaining history, culture, other works, as well as the family trees of the characters.
Altogether a good book.

Readable rendering of seminal saga

This 13th century Icelandic saga of Sigurd the dragon slayer was rediscovered in 19th century Europe and was a prime source for Wagner's Ring cycle, especially the Siegfried part. Elements will also be found in Tolkien. Personally, I came to Norse mythology through the BBC's Adventures of Noggin the Nog (Did he ever put an end to Nogbad the Bad?).

It is a neglected tradition, as evidenced by the paucity of translations in print. We commonly talk of the Classical (Greek and Roman) and Judeo-Christian roots of our culture, but greatly underestimate the Norse and Celtic influences. The Volsung saga and the Niebelungenlied are among the best known and influential of the medieval epics and if you enjoy one you will probably enjoy the other. You might start with the Volsungs because theirs is the shorter and more coherent story, even though the more mythical and fantastic.

Byock's translation is very readable, reflecting the sparse, unadorned style of the original. His introduction is excellent, especially the notes on Wagner, in which he traces the influence of this work in the Ring.

The Saga of Ragnar Lodbrok and The Lay of the Raven follow the Volsung saga in the original manuscripts and form a continuous narrative. So why, as the Volsung saga is quite short, are they not all three published together in one volume? I felt rather short changed. Even so, I heartily recommend this book.

A Famous Tale Well Translated

I wasn't familiar with the Saga of the Volsungs when I bought this book, recommended by a friend. I had read the Prose Edda and the Poetic Edda and enjoyed their great scope and sweep. Here the focus is on one family and its victories, tragedies, betrayals, and revenges. While I was not as enthralled by its story as I was by the Eddas, I've realized since I read it that it brings down to a human scale the mythology and cultural morality I am studying. I am still confused by the ethics and morality of the tale and its time--a good thing; 21st Century people have to reach across more than a dozen centuries to understand these works, written without any knowledge of Christianity.

I've decided to set this book aside for a few months and pick it up again. That says a lot about its value.

Oh My God was this worthwhile

Reading this book was an incredibly validating experience. I have never written a book review in my life but I believe that this work is essential for daughters of narcissistic mothers. I am 45 years old and have been in counseling for 4 years with a great counselor to address my mom's Narcissistic Personality Disorder. I have had difficulties in the denial and acceptance department; it seems that cognitively I know that my mother doesn't have the capacity to ever be warm, loving, or empathetic. However,I have had many instances where I just thought well maybe I am just the nutty girl and go back into denial. My counselor has spent hours upon hours discussing the harm that comes from being raised by a narcissistic mother. And, yes, I have read many books on narcissism. The difference with this book is that it is written from a first hand experience and includes very specific exchanged between the narcissistic mother and the "still" seeking daughter. In reading this book I must have said oh my God hundreds of times. I made margin notes where I wrote "yep" next to so many scenarios, feelings, yearnings, lowered self esteem, being self critical, the workaholism (I am a practicing trial attorney), and the issues with respect to brothers being treated differently. I am the only daughter and I have 3 brothers who had vastly different experiences with my mother. They are all perfect princes and I am the one that is constantly criticized and judged. For many years I have grappled with my brothers' experience versus mine and it was crazy-making. This book explains that daughters of narcissistic mothers may be subject to projection, jealousy, and envy because you are viewed as her extension (or shadow). It finally made sense. IF YOU ARE A DAUGHTER OF A NARCISSIST MOTHER THIS IS THE MOST HONEST AND FORTHRIGHT BOOK THAT I HAVE COME ACROSS AND IT IS ONE THAT I WILL USE AS A REFERENCE GUIDE FOR GROUNDING AND VALIDATION ON A REGULAR BASIS.

the way i am and my life makes sense to me now

I haven't even finished reading this book and is quite literally the most amazing powerful book I have ever read. I have been going to therapy on and off since I was in high school and this has given me more insight into why I am the way that I am. I have crippling social anxiety and depression and self esteem issues and also always put everyone's feelings before my own even if they are not related to me. I am OBSESSED with being "good enough" and pretty enough for everyone and being the best. On the outside I seem like a calm person who can handle anything, but on the inside I am a ticking time bomb who just gets so depressed and anxious I have mental breakdowns and need to take a break from my life for weeks. Most people don't know this because my family taught me my feelings don't matter. In the back of my mind I am ALWAYS worried about what my mother will think and it has literally driven me to insanity. It is like someone has had a hidden camera in my house for the past 15 years and wrote a book about everything they observed. My mother and brothers deny everything I feel so much it makes me feel like I have delusions about how my mom treats me and what my childhood was like although I know they are delusional not me. Everything I have suspected about how my relationship with my mom has impacted my mental health and self image negatively has been confirmed by this book. All the guilt I have felt about thinking my mother is a horrible parent is gone. Any hope I have had about us ever having a good relationship and me "fixing" her just because sometimes she treats me in a loving way like she does with my brothers is gone. Even when I was a teenager I would say to my mom I would rather have emotional support than her than money, food, or shelter. I would always blame being bullied horribly in school for being depressed and having social anxiety because I am so obsessed with people's opinions of me, but as I got older I have started to think "You know what? Maybe if my mom gave me emotional support when I was bullied or in general about ANYTHING I would not be the way that I am." My entire life I have used journals and forums and blogs as outlet for my feelings. She is so controlling she would read all of my journals and tell me I'm not even allowed to write anything negative about her...in a book for my thoughts...that is meant for my eyes only. By saying that she was basically saying she is SO controlling I am not even allowed to THINK anything negative about her. I became obsessed with fashion when I was in high school partially because the reason why I got bullied is because of how I dressed and she would criticize me as well and would call me ugly. Now she criticizes me for shopping too much when she is the reason why I am so obsessed with being stylish and attractive. Speaking of fashion that is what I majored in and I could not imagine myself working in any other industry. I got the highest GPA in my program and even at my graduation from college she was criticizing my appearance and said "congratulations" in a the driest voice like she was disappointed that I actually succeeded. I did not even want her to come to my graduation because I knew she would make it about her and make me angry. She wanted me to go to college for what SHE wanted me to do and I was the most depressed I have ever been and was constantly physically ill. Whenever I am so depressed I can't get out of bed she says I am lazy. She says she doesn't care if I am suicidal. She projects all my feelings about her onto me. She says SHE is the one who actually has depression and suicidal thoughts and I am the reason why. She says she always wanted a girl and then she ended up having me. I do what she says it's not good enough. I don't do what she says like simply washing the dishes she will become so infuriated she throws a glass plate at me. I am a neat freak because the easiest way to please her is by keeping her house clean, but my brother is 26 and she still cleans his room for him. I could go on and on. The point is my mother is a combination of every type of narcissistic mother described in this book besides the addict. I can't begin to heal from her abuse until I get a break from her. I can't get a break from her without money to move out. I can't get enough money without a well paying a job and everyone always says to me the only reason why I am not successful in life is because of my confidence which impacts me negatively during job interviews. I am tired of being trapped in low paying horrible work environments and then coming home to an abusive family. I am tired of being angry and hating myself all the time. This book is exactly what I needed to read.

Will I ever be good enough?

This book did a good job of identifying a mother's narcissistic traits and the damage they cause, however I found this book was a bit simplistic, and longer than it needed to be due to many examples that sometimes detracted from the point rather than enhancing it. It also gave poentially dangerous advice.This includes:

1. The author recommends empathising with mother and focusing on "gifts she has given " . This is unhelpful to people who have spent years seeing everything through their mother's filter and are attempting to forge their own personality. As one whose most enduring "gift" was the implicit and explicit statement that I was unworthy of any happiness, I find this insulting.

2. It was stated that if one had not received support and nurturing from their mother as a child that they should not seek this from others as an adult; rather they should "self-mother" . I found this really illogical, as one can not practice what one has never experienced; additionally, many reading the book would see the word "mother" as having negative connotations. Other authors encourage one to find support and positive relationships with others as a way to recovery.

3. She is reluctant to advise going no-contact until "all recovery work is completed." As others have stated, going no contact is often integral to recovery.

Others have noted that the book reads as though written by one who has not yet come to a resolution herself and I would have to agree with them . It was good at identifying problem areas, but not for resolving them.
