Intriguing connectivity system elements and architectures

As a practicing system engineer and analyst for a dozen years at both TRW and the RAND Corporation (ASW, IFF systems, SDI, Space Telescope) I have followed the development of laser technology for a variety of civil and military applications. Lab experiments in the 1970s and `80s faced seemingly insurmountable obstacles to long distance extrapolation. At the time, they were the stuff of science fiction.

Mr. Aviv's laser communications ideas in the late 1990s and early 2000s were unappreciated because they were far ahead of their time. In this excellent book he captures those groundbreaking ideas using clear illustrations, detailed equations, and references to existing, proven platforms. With the advent of Low Earth Orbit satellite systems, robust fiberoptic cables, the advances in wireless digital communication, Internet, and nanotechnology, theoretical satcom architectures suddenly entered the realm of feasibility at the turn of the 21st century.
Experiments like the SILEX system produced encouraging results showing that space communications need no longer be restricted to RF. Rather than propose an either/or solution (laser versus RF), Mr. Aviv has combined the best of both in a compelling set of alternative system architectures that are flexible, mobile, built on a fiber backbone, and incorporate Internet features. Nanosatellites are elements of some of the creative architectures.

The same data compression approach is used for RF as for combined laser/microwave downlinks in poor weather. One of the key drivers to any system architecture is weather-related signal losses, which affect Bit Error Rate (BER) and influence the design of sophisticated adaptive optical subsystems. The author has accounted for these essential elements in each architecture discussed. Specific calculations show how significant reduction in the BER can be achieved under a wide variety of situations, including reducing beam distortion from atmospheric turbulence and jitter.

The presentation of the text is well suited to engineering students as well as seasoned practicing aerospace engineers. Mr. Aviv first gives a very helpful, comprehensive history and background showing the development of assorted laser types. Today's technologies allow fiber lasers rather than diode lasers, to be compatible with fiber link cable transmissions.

The Miniaturized Unmanned Ground-based Mobile (MUGM) system is especially interesting and exciting. The possibilities of the MUGM seem endless for civil (NASA and NOAA), commercial, military, and law enforcement applications. One can easily envision an advanced network allowing IED identification/neutralization, border patrol surveillance, pirate activity monitoring/interdiction, and drug traffic enforcement on land or sea. Transmitting signals via ground-based optical fiber nets as part of a weather avoidance system architecture clearly gives the military an edge in the war on terrorism.

The wideband communication system the author calls Fifth-Generation Internet (5-GENIN) in principle accommodates all of today's systems (including MUGM) and leads the way for new developments through the next decades. Mr. Aviv makes a credible case for this worldwide communication system with connectivity through earth-based Internet systems for spatial and atmospheric laser downlinks and uplinks. No longer the stuff of science fiction!

Although funding for satellite systems and laser research is always in question, Mr. Aviv has anticipated theoretical elements, now in the experimental stage, and described how they could be incorporated into components of existing architectures. He has carefully demonstrated technical feasibility, invaluable to designers of future laser communications systems.

A Pioneering, Practical New Book

Lasers offer numerous advantages over microwaves for broadcast point to point communications including lower power, tighter focus/footprint, dramatically increased bandwidth, lighter weight (very important if the equipment is being lifted to space), and no requirement for government frequency assignment. Unfortunately these advantages come with some disadvantages as well, especially in weather penetration if the signal goes from space to the surface of the earth.

This book describes the overall engineering aspects of laser space communications systems. It will enable the engineer to design laser data links in a variety of environments. It is intended for the advanced undergraduate student through the practicing engineer and covers all aspects of laser communications including bandwidths, error rate, privacy aspects, platform stability, adaptive optics, weather avoidance systems and advanced concepts of the Transformational Communication Architecture.

About the Author
Lucius Annaeus Seneca (c.4BC-AD65) was born in Cordoba, Spain, where he was brought up studying the traditional virtues of republican Roman life. He became a teacher of rhetoric but attracted attention for his incisive style of writing. Closely linked to Nero, his death was ordered by the emperor in AD65. Seneca committed suicide.

Common Sense, Roman Decadence, and the Meaning of Life

The first time I read this book I was amazed and excited, and entering middle age. Seneca's thoughts on the human condition seemed like they could have been written today. Except for some dated Roman references, here is a man trying to define how to live, in what we today would call "the secular society." The series of letters reads like a personal guidebook to ethics. It still speaks to us across the centuries. Seneca was priveleged, ego centric, and all too aware of the fleeting nature of life. He was also a tutor of Nero, a dramatist, philosopher, slave owner, etc. But his essay-like letters - by turns glib and medatative - reveal a man struggling to make sense of a world of power, wealth and abundance, oestensibly ruled by reason, suffused with uncertainty and enveloped in paganism. He was also no doubt polishing his image for future generations. Nonetheless, he talks of god and spirituality, and the early Christians were said to have valued his wisdom. I've read this two or three times. Each time I've given it away to a friend. Once you read it, you'll go back to it again and again. His maxims are famous. His commonsense advice still rings true.

Stoicism - - a modern philosophy

Stoicism has been much misunderstood, and the adjective "stoic," which loosely can be taken to mean bearing up under duress, is partly correct but does not do justice to one of the world's great philosophies. This Penguin volume presents a great selection from the letters of Seneca, which hits all the high points of the philosophy and captures Seneca's remarkable personality, which has made him a hit with the cognoscenti for 2,000 years. Few perhaps realize that the Stoics postulated a great commonwealth governed by law, or that they idealized democracy. Seneca mentions Solon the lawgiver as the creator of democracy and refers numerous times to the Roman Stoic saint, Cato, who strove mightily (and unsuccessfully) to preserve the Roman Republic.

Seneca, like other Stoics, has a doctrine of nature that is remarkably close to that of Emerson or modern American environmentalists. The wise man (sapiens) will never be bored when contemplating the simple things of nature. The natural beauty of the countryside and the healthful action of the waves can have a calming effect (although there's a memorable passage in which a storm causes terrible sea sickness). He also believed in the simple and strenuous life and the avoidance of luxury and decadence, and there are numerous passages in these letters to his disciple, Lucilius, which decry the ostentatious, self indulgent practices of his contemporaries. These are sentiments and ideas adopted by many in the modern world, including President Theodore Roosevelt. Seneca has no patience for philosophy as a word game or a practice of engaging in hair-splitting arguments for their own sake. He rather sees it as a practice or way of life that all those who seek the good should investigate and adopt. While the Stoics believed in democracy and republicanism, their doctrine of freedom is different from the modern idea of Liberty. Freedom was the ability to endure and pursue the good even under tyranny. While that may be admirable, modern commentators on liberty (such as Isaiah Berlin) have pointed out that defining down the range of one's actions is not a satisfactory solution to the problem of the absence of liberty in society or the world.

No stranger to power himself, Seneca virtually ruled Rome as tutor of the boy Nero--and yet he adopts a quite believable stance of simplicity and humility. It's a good bet these letters will still be found absorbing by readers for another 2,000 years.

The unmannerly guest or Penguin butchers a classic author once again.

This will not be a review about Seneca. I suppose I will attempt that one day once I manage to go thru my library's Loeb Classical Library edition of Seneca's Epistles.
The purpose of this review is to bellyache about the Penguin Classics' edition of this work. I come not to criticize this translation. I have no Latin. For all I know it is brilliant.
What I am here to criticize is the decision to edit Seneca's work all to Tartarus and back. There are 124 Letters in Seneca's Epistles. Campbell gives you 40. Or just over 32%! Campbell's criteria as to which letters to present is a personal one. He evaluated their interest and whether or not they were repetitive. His is admittedly charming in his own defense on this issue. He quotes Roger L'Estrange (another anthologist of Seneca's) from 1673 to the effect that anyone who complains about the selection is an unmannerly guest who eats at his host's table and then critiques the meal. I embrace this description. I may well use The Unmannerly Guest as my nom de plume for my reviews from now on.
Here is my problem. All too often the editors or translators of the Penguin Classic editions decide that they know better than the ancient author what is valuable about the work for today's reader. Their Plutarch is one such travesty. Their edition of Polybius is another. What makes it more confusing is they can get it right sometime, as with their edition of Livy.
I think they are really missing their chance here. The Penguin Classics series is the perfect publishing series for modern and complete editions of ancient authors presented in their original form as much as is possible.
Let us look at how personal Campbell's choice is. I happen to be reading The Roman Stoics: Self, Responsibility, and Affection by Gretchen Reydams-Schils. She happens to cite 185 passages from Seneca's Epistles during the course of her book. Because I am The Unmannerly Guest, I took it upon myself to count up how many of those passages were not in Campbell's selection. 122 of the 185 or just over 65%. In other words, she made as much use of the letters Campbell did not publish as those he did. His choices were no more representative of Seneca's thought to Reydams-Schils than the letters he rejected.
Here's another way to look at it. Seneca was writing about a philosophy to be lived. Not a system of thought but a guide to behavior. It is inevitable that such a guide would be repetitive. The same sort of issues, of temptations, of annoyances come up again day after day with slight variations (e.g.,anyone trying to raise courteous children knows what I mean). Repetition in an author dealing with such a guide is to be expected; indeed, it is to be appreciated as helpful. It takes time to learn how to live.
I think we ought to take old Seneca and Plato and Augustine and Machiavelli and Locke and so on seriously. When we read them we should try to sink into their way of living not just their way of thinking about that life. Only then can we evaluate how much they speak to us.
The Penguin Classics, accordingly to this Unmannerly Guest, do not help us in this endeavor. And the fact that they have chosen to present us with a highlighted tour of ancients like Seneca and Polybius is a betrayal of the original mission of the series which was to make the classics easily available to the masses. I speak for those masses as much as anyone. And I say, give me the whole da*@ book. Let me be the one to make the editing decisions.

Lamentablemente no parece un libro serio que busque ayudar realmente a las personas que se pueden enfrentar a personas que utilizan el maltrato frecuentemente. Mas allá de describir abundantemente las características de una persona que maltrata (para lo cual utiliza terminos que me generan dudas con respecto a su verdadero significado), es falto de elementos practicos que puedan ser utilizados para abordar a estas personas. La verdad no pude ir mas allá de su primer capítulo, ya que me pareció una perdida de tiempo el continuar con su lectura.

not meant for a traditional bow.

I assume it is good for people who shoot fancy compound bows hung about with all kinds of gizmos. But I wish I had known it is not meant for a traditional bow. There was very little that I found applicable. There was good info on body posture, and the why and how of a smooth draw and release. But I don't use, have or want the release device he spent so much time going on about & I don't have or want sights, so the bulk of the book was irrelevant to me. The instructions about keeping back tension were too brief, in my opinion, and too dependent on the release device as a learning aide ( re: if it goes off when it should, apparently that means you did it right... well, I don't have that device, so...) If you want advice on shooting a traditional bow - look elsewhere.

A very good book- with one small reservation.

An excellent book for beginning archers. The explanation and teaching in the musculature and psychological aspects of archery form are extremely well presented and illustrated. The one small reservation is that there is no warning other than the front page graphic that the book is 99.9% intended for users of compound bows and trigger releases. There is almost an entire chapter exclusively discussing trigger releases and techniques to the exclusion of recurve release techniques.

Potential users of recurve bows using finger tab or glove release will find very short shrift with only a few paragraphs and photos pertaining to finger release.

Despite this minor shortfall, the great majority of the book on form, muscle involvement, psychology and aiming, refers equally and thoroughly to either recurve or compound archery.

A chapter specifically discussing finger release techniques and arrow flight effects with tabs or gloves would have been helpful- the author clearly understands recurve bow use but chose to give it very minimal coverage, concentrating on the compound bow in discussion and illustrations.

Very Good Information on Shooting Technique

I really liked this book. The book is geared toward compound shooters but the principles of the establishment of regimented routine form integrated with mental concentration are invaluable to all archers. The book's main information is about developing regimented routine of reproducing physical mechanics of setting up and shooting a successful shot over and over. I found the final 2 chapters about Aiming and the Mental Game of Archery very helpful. The mental game chapter was great and I would recommend the book based on that chapter alone. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in archery and improving skills and consistency.

Daphne, the most beautiful of the Six Sisters, picks her own husband

It seems that 18-year-old Daphne, the fourth daughter of the Reverend Charles Armitage, is the most beautiful of "The Six Sisters" that Marion Chesney has been writing about in these romance novels of Regency England, so of course that means trouble. No one is more aware of Daphne's dazzling beauty than Daphne herself, who is also painfully aware of her father's track record when it comes to finding wealthy noblemen to marry his daughters. As we all know, the vicar likes to hunt, and he requires the financial support of his three sons-in-law to do so. But Daphne has other ideas, namely to marry Cyril Archer. At face value (and I do mean at face value), they are a perfect match, because he is as vain and empty-headed as Daphne herself. Once married, she can continue to present the pretty picture of herself to the world without having to reveal there is an empty shell of a woman behind the beautiful face.

However, while Daphne is in London with Lady Godolphin the malaprop-prone cousin whose home all of the Armitage girls seem to end up with when they visit London town, Reverend Armitage's affairs suffer a catastrophic misfortune. You see, a jealous bishop is after the vicar's hunting pack, and when Mr. Simon Garfield comes to the rescue, and proves himself to be as rich as he is noble, Reverend Armitage offers up Daphne as a bride. This means daughter number four is going to have to drop the facade and demand the right to find her own husband (like that is going to happen). Meanwhile, Annabelle, the second oldest sister, is having troubles with her own marriage because the new baby in the house tends to scream all of the time. Annabelle might be more maternal if the boy was actually her own, but that, of course, is part of the problem.

"Daphne" would not be a Chesney romance if the title character was not put into a compromising position, and we have one of those as well in this book. But by now Chesney's readers fully understand and appreciate her formula as one forced marriage after another leads to true love and romance. There are plenty of period touches for those who pay attention to such details, and while the characters are all familiar types from such tales, Chesney clearly takes great pleasure in putting them through their paces. Besides, all of the twists and turns in the plot add to the general sense of merriment, as does her sense of humor. But in the end love will prevail, Mr. Archer will be forced to flee the field, and the vicar will get to keep his hunt. Next up is "Diana the Huntress," which should give you plenty of indications as to what sort of handful she will prove to be and if you have gotten two-thirds of the way through the series there is no reason to stop now.

The six sister

I've bought the six sisters' series in the wrong order with Daphne being the last one in the series that I got. The book is good and typical Marion Chesney. Daphne, who knows she is a beauty, finds another beauty in the handsome Cyril Archer, but in typical Marion Chesney style, there is more to meet the eye. The Vicar is indebeted to a Mr. Simon Garfield, who is able to read Daphne like a book. He knows she knows she's a beauty and putting up a front because it's easier that way. The way Marion Chesney gets these two finally together is delightful.
This is not the best of the six sisters' series, that's why I gave only four stars. I was somewhat handicapped since I had the read all the other in the series before I read Daphne. I would recommend you read the series in the correct order, but even if you don't, this book is still wonderful to read.

another hilarious romp!

I'm not sure if the authors British or not but these books are so darn clever, witty & intelligently written! I'm just in love with the whole series and I am so happy that there are more MC Beaton books out so that I can read a different series is well. I hate to give any spoilers but I'll just say that if you want to good laugh and a Merry romp through a regency romance, then this is your series!

His interests and specialties include systems analysis and design, graphical user interface design, object-oriented development, and database and client-server development. He earned his MBA from Cal Poly University and his Ph.D. from the Claremont Graduate University.

Robert Jackson is a retired member of the faculty of the Information Systems Department at Brigham Young University. He has researched, published, and taught in the areas of object-oriented systems development, e-commerce, Web systems, project management, and information systems education. Bringing a wealth of real-world business experience and technical expertise to this book, Dr. Jackson is currently self-employed as a principal in several new e-commerce ventures, where he practices firsthand the analysis, design, and business principles presented in the Seventh Edition. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Brigham Young University.

Dr. Stephen Burd is an Associate Professor at the University of New Mexico, where he has been teaching courses in management information systems, networks, databases, and hardware/software since 1984. The author of more than seven top-selling textbooks for Course Technology and Cengage Learning, Dr. Burd brings significant strengths and industry knowledge to this text. He received his B.B.A. and M.B.A. from the University of Baltimore and his Ph.D. from Purdue University.

Worst.Textbook.Ever

A $200 textbook that didn't teach me anything Wikipedia couldn't have done for free. Terrible, terrible book. Only good news is that I can sell it back to Amazon at the end of the semester for about half of what I paid. Buy used if you have to have this book for class, like I did.

I did not like the way things were organized in this book

I did not like the way things were organized in this book. Many very important concepts in this book are lost within large blocks of small text without even changing the font. If you like to read these things word for word, go for it. You can learn these concepts online in a fraction of the time. I gave up on the book a third of the way through the semester and still scored an A. I just looked at what the chapter was going to teach and found well thought out powerpoints and pdf's from other universities to study.

Not the best text, but better than previous editions

I am taking this class in college that requires this book. I tried to get away with the 5th edition, but they were nothing alike. The instructor assigned questions at the end of the chapter that didn't exist in the 5th edition so I had to upgrade. I can say though that the 6th edition is MUCH better than the 5th edition. However, as far as IT textbooks go, this one kinda sucks. IMO

About the Author

Andreas Deja was ten years old when he first applied for a job as a Disney animator. The Walt Disney Studios wrote back to Deja telling him that they had no openings, but were always on the lookout for new talent. At the age of 20, he applied again and was accepted. This launched a long and successful career with Disney. Deja has left his mark on some of the most memorable and successful Disney animated features and shorts. His early work includes animation and character design for The Great Mouse Detective, Oliver & Company, and Who Framed Roger Rabbit. In addition, he is known for his animation of some of Disney’s most evil villains: Gaston, Jafar, and Scar. The list of memorable characters continues with King Triton, Mickey Mouse, Hercules, Lilo, Goofy, Tigger, Mama Odie, and Juju. In 2006, at the 35th Annie Awards, Deja was awarded the Winsor McCay Award for outstanding contribution to the art of animation. In 2015, he was named a Disney Legend by the Walt Disney Company. Presently, Deja is working on his own independent animated short films and is actively involved in his animation-related blog, Deja View.

The Tenth Old Man Honors The Original Nine

Over the past 25 years we've seen lots of books written by great fans of animation. This is the first done by a great animator who-- as a result of Divine Fate or cocked up luck-- arrived on the art scene just after the Golden Age of animation had sadly ended. Fortunately for us, Andreas sees himself as the chronicler of that great age, the age of the fabulous Nine Old Men. As is the case, I'm sure, with each of Andreas' hardcore fans, my copy of "The Nine Old Men" was pre-ordered the moment I discovered it was available---and I anticipate waiting at the door soon to greet it with the words, "Hello my new friend, welcome to Hawaii." But in the meantime, forgive me for jumping the gun somewhat to review Andreas' book based on the utterly remarkable "See Inside the Book" appearing above. "The 9 Old Men" appears to be a typical Deja production--- and by that I mean, a pure delight. Anyone who has visited Andreas' blog "Deja View" (itself one of the Wonders of the Modern World), knows this man/boy is possessed of the deepest appreciation for 2 dimensional animation ---so deep, in fact, that his live lectures come across as art events themselves ---somewhere in between poetry readings and improvisational theater. All that enthusiasm and affection is present in the pages of "The 9 Old Men" ---the meticulous selection of extraordinary artwork, the heartfelt exposition (spiced with Andreas' clever "asides"), the astute delineation of the process by which drawings are made to move (in both senses of that word).
In 100 years, if anyone wonders what that thing called 2 dimensional animation was all about, all they'll need to do is consult this lovely gem of a book. Actually, as I think about it, Andreas has done something more than that. Something more beautiful. I read once that Gustave Dore, interrupted work on his long planned masterpiece, The Veil of Tears, to design a sculpture for the tomb of his friend and hero, Alexandre Dumas ---a magnificent D'artagnan, sword drawn, standing guard over Dumas' soul for all eternity. This is, in essence, what Andreas has done ---delaying completion of his own labor of love, the short film Mushka, to undertake a similar gesture of friendship to departed friends --only he's erected a safe resting place for 9 great souls, not just one.

Simply Brilliant! This book could NOT have been written by ANYONE else. Andreas KNEW almost all of them. So these are FACTS, not opinions.
I worked at Disney Animation many years ago. And I have been waiting along time for a book like this! The way Andreas fills the page with heartfelt stories, and techniques and using negative space to fill with beautiful images. BREATHTAKING! If you're a fan of a Walt Disney, Andreas Deja or animation you MUST buy this book!
I can't wait to sit down and start sketching! Not that I can hold a candle to any of these artists. But you can't help to be utterly inspired. Thank you Andreas! A legend animator creates a legendary book!!!
