I have taken a lot of insights from this text. It's not the mere adaptation of marketing to lifescience, like the majority of texts with the same title. I heartily recommend "Pharmaceutical Marketing".

Great overview of the subject

Book received just described and promised. No quarrel there. Harvard University Press put the thing together on the cheap. In one reading, the pages came unglued. After a time, so did the reader.

The Mathew Arnold's conception is wiser and more comprehensive

The conception of the 'classic' which stands at the center of this work is Vergilian.Kermode writes, "Vergil as the classic of empire and the type of all classics" He then goes on to read this Vergilian idea as it goes through transformations in Western culture. Centering on the question of 'permanence and change' he comes to a definitiion of the modern classic which introduces concepts of plurality , secularization, and change.

I found this work extremely difficult to read. I also found it did not really deal in a way I would have liked to have seen with literary matters and texts, though its concluding example is an analysis of 'Wuthering Heights'.

I much prefer Arnold's way of thinking about ' the best that has been thought and said'. And his relating it to ' classic works' which surely precede those of Vergil, what Arnold calls the Hellenic and Hebraic.

As for the question of what makes a work one which all subsequent generations wish to read and reread, I believe this touches upon a question Kermode does not raise, i.e. What constitutes true literary greatness?'

About the Author
Edith Turner is Lecturer in Anthropology at the University of Virginia, USA, specializing in the study of ritual, religion, and consciousness. She has been researching the field of symbol/ritual for nearly 60 years - formerly in collaboration with her husband, renowned anthropologist Victor Turner - and has conducted fieldwork in Zambia, Northern Alaska, rural Ireland, Central and South America, Europe, and Asia. She was editor in chief of the journal, A+nthropology and Humanism , and is author of Heart of Lightness: The Life of an Anthropologist (2006), Among the Healers: Stories of Spiritual and Ritual Healing around the World (2005), and a contributor to Shamanism: A Reader (2003).

The Realized Community

This is a wonderful book, bringing together decades of ethnographic field research with the experience of being in, and creating relationships among people. Reminiscent of the concept of the beloved community, Communitas expands on the work of Victor Turner, exploring the ways in which groups can create a sense of connection, bringing/allowing new people into the shared space of belonging through the ritual process.
This is an important addition to the literature of anthropology and speaks to the apparent hunger in our alienated society for a sense of connection as expressed by various populist movements such as OWS.
It is also quite simply, a pleasure to read and the gift of an exceptional anthropologist and humanist.

This book serves as an excellent resource of stories and descriptions of the experience of "communitas" a originally defined by Victor Turner, here extended to a far-reaching range of collective celebration both in the secular and religious worlds. We have known very little about how apparently spontaneous, temporary community sentiments emerge and are perceived across cultures. This book provides an important dimension to our understanding of human behavior across cultures by examining and exploring the special counterpoints to social structural rules and regulations that dictate our lives. It is written as a series of stories and thus is easy and enjoyable reading.
